The Blue Lily. Flower Power? Sacred Weeds

When the tomb of King Tut was opened in 1922 his body was found covered with the 3,000-year-old remains of blue water lilies-the same plant represented in numerous wall paintings, carved into the pillars at Karnak, and honored as an emblem of creation. Egyptologists have considered the motif to be purely symbolic, but had the flower in fact been used as a mind-altering drug? In this program Oxford anthropology professor Andrew Sherratt enlists the aid of two volunteers to determine whether the blue lily possesses psychoactive properties, while an ethnobotanist, an Egyptologist, and a pharmacologist gather to observe its effects. In the end, the experiment raised more questions than it answered.
