Rainer Maria Rilke
Description
Born in Prague in 1875, Rainer Maria Rilke lived a relatively brief life, dying in Switzerland at the age of 51. His artistic accomplishments, however, were long-lasting and numerous, and he is widely considered one of the greatest figures in the history of German literature. This program features an actor who skillfully recreates the poet's personality and humanity, conveying to the camera his complex views, attitudes, and experiences. Meanwhile, beautiful songs based on Rilke's poetry are presented, including Arnold Schoenberg's "Der Genugsame Liebhaber," the "Pantoum" from Maurice Ravel's Trio in A minor, Richard Strauss' "Traumerei" and "Sehnsucht," and more.
