Description
In the 19th century Greenwich, England, was chosen as a location for the Prime Meridian, beginning an era of sailing that flourished as accurate maps based on longitude and latitude were developed. This program uses classical navigation, global positioning systems, and modern architecture to explore key concepts of coordinate geometry. The Guggenheim Museum's nautilus-shaped gallery serves as an example of a logarithmic spiral that can be graphed on a polar coordinate system, and treasure-hunters rely on geometry to find loot from a Spanish galleon sunk off the Florida Keys. The video also explains why Mercator projection maps distort the size of Greenland.
