The Fall of the Aztecs
Description
Hernán Cortés embarked from Cuba in 1519 seeking gold and riches in the islands to the west. Instead he discovered, and ultimately destroyed, an unknown civilization. In this program, Michael Wood retraces the beginnings of this fateful expedition. Presented through Spanish eyewitness accounts and illustrated by pictographs, the film describes the conquistadors' initial awe at the Aztec achievements and subsequent lust for native treasure. It is also a rare look at the Aztec side of the story, revealing the hardships and agony of the fall of an empire.
