Japan under American Occupation
Description
Featuring previously classified footage shot immediately after World War II, this A and E Special illustrates the first steps in Japan's transformation from an implacable foe to one of America's most important allies. Harrowing images of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, devastated by atomic bombs, and of overloaded hospitals trying to cope with post-blast injuries and radiation sickness are juxtaposed with scenes showing Japan's first free elections and the nation's efforts to rebuild.
