Congress Debates the Equal Rights Amendment ca. 1983
Description
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which was first proposed in the 1920s, again became a national issue in 1983 when Democrats in Congress reintroduced the legislation. Supporters of the amendment argued that it was necessary to prohibit gender-based discrimination, while opponents argued that it could rescind some women's rights and would force the federal government to pay for abortions.
