Description
As part of his Great Society program, President Lyndon B. Johnson argued for national legislation that would remove the remaining barriers preventing some African Americans from voting. Known as the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the bill was overwhelmingly passed by Congress and radically increased the number of black voters in the South.
