Lab Technicians Test Drugs on Animals ca. 1956
Description
The use of animals in scientific research has always been controversial. During the 1950s, when the pharmaceutical industry began to grow, companies that tested vaccines and other drugs on laboratory animals such as chimpanzees and gerbils released films downplaying the issue of cruelty to animals while emphasizing the importance of animal testing to consumer product safety. The Animal Welfare Act of 1966 aimed to improve conditions for some laboratory animals.
