Description
North Africa was an important theater of battle during World War II. After Mussolini declared war on Britain in 1940, British troops launched campaigns against the Italians in Libya, Ethiopia, and in the colony of Italian East Africa. German support arrived in 1941, led by Erwin Rommel. Although the Germans temporarily pushed British troops back towards Egypt, the British, with the aid of U.S. troops on the western front, forced Rommel to surrender in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia.
