Description
By January 1944 Allied troops occupied Sicily and Southern Italy and were steadily advancing towards Rome, a key goal in the operation. Although the Italian forces had surrendered and declared armistice in 1943, Germany immediately filled in strategic posts to defend against the Allied advancement. The "Winter Line" a series of German defenses running along Italy's Sangro river, slowed the Allied advancement, but ultimately the army pushed through, reaching Rome in June 1944.
