Federico Garcia Lorca

Description

Initially trained as a classical pianist, Lorca became one of Spain's greatest poets and dramatists. This program weaves archival footage with dozens of photos and manuscripts to examine his work, his influences, and his friendships with other luminaries, including Luis Bunuel, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Neruda. Such poetic works as Llanto por Ignacio Sanchez Mejias, Poema del Cante Jondo, and Romancero Gitano are discussed in the context of their creation, as well as the plays La Zapatera Prodigiosa, Bodas de Sangre, Yerma, and La Casa de Bernarda Alba. The roles of Yerma and Bernarda are closely examined, as well as Lorca's tragic muse Margarita Xirgu, for whom these parts were written. The program concludes with his murder by the Nationalists in his native Granada.
