Georges Rouault—The Greatest Painters of the World
Description
One of the greatest French artists of the 20th century, Georges Rouault was a painter, draughtsman, and a remarkable writer. An early apprenticeship as a glass painter and restorer is credited as the likely source of his later style, with its heavy black contouring and glowing colors. A student of Gustave Moreau, his early works show a symbolism and use of color that probably reflects the latter’s influence. His characterizations of overemphasized grotesque personalities inspired the Expressionist painters.
