Gustave Moreau—The Greatest Painters of the World
Description
Gustave Moreau was a French painter and engraver, and one of the main representatives of the Symbolist painting movement. Moreau believed that painting should not seek to replicate nature, but should originate from deep within the artist. He sought to render reality and life experiences in the abstract. A professor at the School of Fine Arts of Paris, he also converted his family home into a museum shortly before he died. He left nearly 1,200 paintings, watercolors and pastels, as well as almost 5,000 drawings.
