Martin Chuzzlewit. Episode 2
Description
Young Martin is expelled from the Pecksniff household, much to the sorrow of Pecksniff ’s faithful assistant, Tom Pinch. Martin resolves to seek his fortune in America, taking with him Mark Taply, formerly of The Blue Dragon Inn in Little Hadding, who volunteers to act as his unpaid servant until his fortune is made. At a secret rendezvous, Martin says a tearful farewell to Mary; they pledge their love and she gives him a diamond ring. Meanwhile Pecksniff ’s daughter Charity has been receiving the attentions of her cousin Jonas, son of Anthony Chuzzlewit, old Martin’s estranged brother. Ever open to a money-making opportunity, Anthony seems to encourage the match, but later summons Pecksniff and expresses some doubts. Before Pecksniff has time to enquire further, Anthony suffers a lethal stroke. Jonas seems strangely fearful that he will be blamed for his father’s death, and asks Pecksniff to stay.
