Against the grain
Description
Against the Grain looks at the complexities of coming out amongst women in the API (Asian Pacific Islander) community. Looking at women within Los Angeles County, the film seeks to understand the struggles that occur between parents and their daughters as they try to accept them for who they are. Growing up in a traditional Asian American household, the idea of honor and respect is firmly impressed on their minds. Questions of honor, respect, and “saving face” come into play when looking at the coming out experience. These women cannot simply come out without reflecting on their parents in some shape or form, and thus the process itself becomes difficult to even endure.
