Michael Tilson-Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra with Yuja Wang, Matthews, Gerswin, Shostakovich. Hidden variables

Description

The LSO's Principal Guest Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas celebrates his 70th birthday with a concert featuring a selection of significant pieces from his career spanning Britain, Russia, and his native U.S.A. The London Symphony Orchestra create a vast aural landscape in Shostakovich 5th symphony, on which the conductor himself presented an hour-long episode of the television documentary Keeping Score. Sensational young Chinese pianist Yuja Wang joins the orchestra in Gershwin's popular Concerto, a piece roughly contemporary to Shostakovich's first Symphonic works, where the contrast between a playful, jazz-infused American style and Shostakovich's hollow celebration of the USSR is most evident. Hidden Variables emerged from Colin Matthews' time as an Associate Composer with the Orchestra; Originally a work for chamber ensemble, Tilson Thomas commissioned the transcription of this piece for orchestra jointly between the London Symphony Orchestra and his New World Symphony, giving both the European and American premieres in 1992.
