Tsunamis 101
Description
Japan has been hit by many tsunamis as a result of its location on four tectonic plates. Tsunamis occur when colliding plates produce earthquakes that displace water. The resulting waves travel to land, where they can engulf and destroy shore communities, often with multiple and receding waves. Tsunami 2004 in the Indian Ocean remains the largest tsunami disaster to date. In Honolulu, scientists at NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center monitor global tremors.
