Say Brother. Black Stars
Description
Program examines the topic of African Americans in the film industry via a group discussion among industry professionals as directed by Producer Topper Carew. Program guests actress Lee Chamberlin, actor/producer Brock Peters, and New York Amsterdam News, New York Times, and Encore film critic James Murray discuss the differences between theater and film, the recent marketing interest in African American audiences, and what Black audiences want to watch. Films discussed include Sounder, Uptown Saturday Night, Five on the Black Hand Side, Superfly, Nothing But a Man, and Save the Children, of which clips from Five on the Black Hand Side and Uptown Saturday Night appear. James Murray's book Black Films: From Uncle Tom to Superfly factors into the discussion, as does the controversy over the impact on the viewer of drugs, violence, and sex in films. Original air date not estimated, though assumed to be spring 1974.
