Despite increasingly refined war technology and a growing global spotlight on human rights, mass rape is often used as a tool of war in modern combat. 25,000 to 40,000 women were victims of systematic rape during the Balkan War from 1992 to 1995. Twenty years after this conflict, very few cases of war crimes of sexual violence have been investigated or prosecuted. For many victims, these rapes continue to cast a dark shadow in their lives, and speaking out remains taboo. Mission Rape shares the stories of a group of women that meets regularly in Sarajevo. They see legal action as the only hope to regain some of what's been taken from them, but the justice system often fails them. To date, only 61 men have been sentenced for rape committed during the war. This film explores the reality of this injustice, and demands attention to the lasting consequences of these unpunished war crimes.
