Sobukwe's decisive action on 21 March 1960 led to the massacre of Sharpeville, where police fired on unarmed peaceful protesters and shot many of them in the back. Sobukwe gave Pan Africanism new life, paving the way for the emergence of Steve Biko, and the student uprising of 16 June 1976. Sobukwe's iconic status led to a special session of the UN, and he was Prisoner No 1 on Robben Island. The apartheid government passed a special statute, the Sobukwe Clause, to keep his ideas from the rest of the world.
