The Alaskan Gold Rush of 1882 brought prosperity to many brave adventurers and daring speculators. It also stimulated the development of several large cities, including Anchorage, which has grown from a small mining camp and railroad town into Alaska's largest commercial and transportation center. Located near Alaska's southeastern coast, the city itself is less than 100 years old, and its modern architecture and facilities provide a dramatic contrast to the wilderness and natural geological features five minutes away.
