Nuclear fungus
Description
Fungus has been found thriving in highly radioactive conditions and is rich in melanin. As radiation causes cell damage and mutation, the melanin acts as a shield absorbing energy from the radiation, and the fungus growth is enhanced. Fungi could be used in the future as a means of cleaning up nuclear waste and developing new cancer treatments.
