Labelled 'Project Vampire' by its most virulent critics, The Human Genome Diversity Project is changing and challenging the way we think about the human species. The aim of scientists is to identify all of the approximately 30,000 genes in human DNA and create a global family tree. Seen by scientists as a bold project to construct the entire story of our species, it is seen by some indigenous groups as an unwanted intrusion in the name of science.
