Green matters. Episode 24
Description
Italy Wind- More and more countries are establishing wind farms in a bid to stop temperatures rising. But in some areas tempers are rising as the mighty turbines draw their share of criticism. 120 km east of Naples, wind turbines pepper the skyline of the Appenini Mountains. Alone they are not going to eliminate Italy's carbon emissions, but they are a start. Orangutan Rescue- One of the most commonly used edible oils is palm oil. High in saturated fat, it's used in packaged food items from biscuits to ice cream, as well as soap, toothpaste and lipstick. It's also used for Biodiesel. 83 per cent of the world's palm oil is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia, where massive tracts of forest have been destroyed for palm plantations. Critics have dubbed the oil 'deforestation diesel'. Mexico Recycling- With a population of almost 9 million people, Mexico City generates 12,000 tonnes of waste every day. To cope, the city has introduced new laws to encourage recycling, requiring residents and businesses to do their bit for the environment. Sixteen new trucks provide separate space for organic rubbish which is composted and non-organic waste, much of which can be recycled. Eco Furniture- More and more people are choosing to buy greener and ethically made products. In the United States, gaining popularity is sustainable furniture--made with non-toxic, renewable materials. Today's eco-styles have come a long way--modern, progressive and edgy with many consumers even willing to pay extra for furniture with a green label. Carbon Capture- The biggest single emitters of carbon are fossil fuels. Coal, oil and gas contribute to an estimated 80 percent of greenhouse gases every year. Industry, transport and private cars all play a part. But a large and steadily growing area is coal-powered electricity generation.
