Description
Inspired by the short story Antareen written by Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto, the film shows the unfolding telephone relationship of two strangers. A young writer, staying alone, strikes up a friendship with a lonely anonymous female caller. We soon learn that she is the mistress of a rich old man, who keeps her in a lavish apartment and maintains her lower-middle-class family. Feeling powerless by her circumstance, she exerts control over the phone relationship by calling him only at her pleasure. As their conversations continue, so do their attachment to each other. They finally meet in a train compartment where his voice gives her a moment of recognition. The writer was played by Anjan Dutt, and the woman on the phone by Dimple Kapadia.
