Miss Beatty's children

Description

In 1936 Colonial India, Jane Beatty moves to Trippuvur to work for Mabel Forster, a missionary determined to make a difference and save young local girls from being sold to the temple for prostitution. When Jane purchases a girl to save her from such a fate, she brings the mission into a head-on conflict with Kamla Devi, a senior temple woman. Jane is then forced to smuggle the girl out of Trippuvur and put her up for adoption in the city. However, when Jane realizes that adopted children get sent back to the mission when their British foster parents move home to England, she is unwilling to leave the girl to such a fate. Thus, Jane Beatty makes her first adoption. However, being a single parent to Indian and Eurasian children proves to be challenging in a racially discriminating society. American doctor Alan Chandler helps her out along the way, becoming her confidante, but big changes are ahead as the beginnings of the Second World War start to brew.
