Early years workshop. Discussion. Listening and questioning. 4
Description
Led by adviser Sheila Sage, the Early Years Workshop panel looks at the importance of listening to young children and how practitioners can recognise the many different ways young children pose questions. Joined by experts Jan Dubiel, Principal Officer of the Foundation Stage Profile for QCA, and Diane Rich, from Rich Learning Opportunities, the panel invites nursery practitioner Chris Ross from Evesham Nursery School to discuss how it's not always easy to see when young children are questioning, because not all questions are verbal. They look back across two weeks at Evesham Nursery and see how the children initiated an investigation into the properties of water. The children are exploring water, starting with their outdoor water tap. The panel discusses the kind of questions the children were posing - how heavy is water, how far will water spread? The panel discuss how practitioners can best establish a culture of listening and promote questioning with young children.
