KS3/4 design and technology. Leading the way. Sustainability. 1
Description
Our current pupils are the designers of the future whose work will have a significant impact on the environment we live in. Good Design & Technology departments make sure these future designers understand the issues around sustainable development, and always think in terms of how the products they make meet social, economic and environmental considerations. Kevin Hull, Head of D&T at a large Birmingham comprehensive, has made it his mission to get his pupils automatically thinking about sustainability in all their designing and making activities. But what does 'sustainability' really mean, and how does it apply to D&T? This programme reveals the kind of work Kevin has introduced in his school, including an Eco Bean Caf project in Year 7, and a design project based on the three Rs (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse) in Year 10. Kevin explains how he got his department's Education for Sustainable Development programmes up and running, and sets out his vision for its future.
