The lost children of Chechnya
Description
During the Chechen wars Dr Khassan Baiev saved the lives of thousands of men, women and children. For his work he was sentenced to death by the Russian and the Chechen rebels and fled to live in the USA. He returned to Grozny this summer to operate on the most badly maimed, deformed or disfigured children -- and to break the Russian information blackout to bring news of their plight to the world. The children of Chechnya are the forgotten victims of Russia's dirty war -- 40,000 died in the two Chechen wars -- another half million survive today -- but they are maimed by landmines, born with stress-related deformities and traumatised beyond imagination. Chechnya is one of the most heavily land-mined countries on earth. Every year hundreds of children are horribly maimed by them. The Lost Children of Chechnya is a moving account of an amazing man, doing amazing things.
