How do they do it in Chicago?
Description
Over half of Chicago's black male students drop out of high school. Developing outstanding leadership representative of the school population is seen as the key to overcoming this. Although nearly 90% of Chicago's public school students are black and Hispanic, aspiring black and Hispanic school leaders face many obstacles. We look at 4 key strategies to overcome the barriers: - offering subsidised leadership training targeted at under-represented groups - developing a new model of leadership - recruiting beyond traditional routes - raising the number of college-educated black and Hispanic leaders of the future. We're seeing evidence that there's tremendous power in having strong African-American and Latino leaders in our schools, says Tim Knowles of Chicago's Urban Education Institute.
