Healthy school food
Description
Mike Baker and Sheena McDonald discuss the government's latest initiatives and regulations designed to encourage healthier eating in schools, looking at new nutritional standards for school meals as well as the introduction of compulsory lessons in food technology in schools where facilities are available. Nutritional Therapist Kerry Torrens shows us how and why school food has changed. We talk to Shadow Schools Minister, Nick Gibb, who argues that although the Conservatives think food technology should be an extra-curricular activity, they are fully behind the government on their school meals policy. Michael Nelson of the School Foods Trust is positive the new nutrition standards as well as the encouragement of cookery will ensure a healthier generation of young people, and Barbara Hearn, from the National Children's Bureau, hopes that this generation will be able to pass on their cookery skills to their parents at home.
