The trouble with boys
Description
There are twice as many boys with learning difficulties as there are girls. In special units, boys outnumber girls by six to one. By seven years of age, one-third of boys, compared to one-fifth of girls, are struggling to read. Five times as many boys are excluded from school. Girls outperform boys in all GCSE subjects and women outnumber men in universities. This programme, looks at why boys underachieve, how their methods of learning differ from girls and, most importantly, what schools can do to close the gender gap for good. In Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, Gary Wilson is employed by Kirklees council specifically to raise boys achievement after successfully turning around their performance in his own school. His tactics have been shown to work. With a personal tour of two schools that are doing great work in improving their standards, he provides the insider's guide to raising boys achievement.
