Loosening the grip
Description
Behaviour management guru John Bayley works with teachers to help them to improve their technique. This week he looks at the benefits of giving pupils responsibility for their own learning. After observing a lesson conducted by a school's alternative curriculum teacher at Key Stage 4, Bayley feels that both the teacher and his pupils could benefit from a different style of teaching. Bayley suggests that the pupils, many of whom lack confidence, would embrace a style of teaching which gives them more responsibility. This would allow them to set their own targets and assess how well they are achieving them.To get an idea of how such a system could work, Bayley and the teacher observe language teacher Sharon Fountain in a French lesson which is geared towards encouraging children to achieve specific levels of understanding. From this an action plan for the future emerges. But will it work?
