Independence day
Description
When Teach First beginner Iesha Small was a student she was highly independent, but now, faced by a class of 20 highly dependent year 10 Maths students at Islington Green School in North London, she finds her pupils lack of self-drive continually frustrating. She sees them as totally reliant on her, and would like John Bayley to offer her some advice. In this programme Bayley helps Iesha begin to define the qualities that make an independent learner, and discusses with her strategies that she can employ to help it happen. A week after Bayley's feedback session we see Iesha putting his sound advice into practice, with encouraging results.
