More than a special school

Description

Anti-social behaviour in schools is at the forefront of many teachers minds. The teaching unions have placed it high on their conference agendas and the major political parties have debated long and hard over the years about the root causes of bad behaviour and how to deal with it. These groups can argue over the statistics but it's the teaching staff at the receiving end who have dealt with the behaviour directly. This powerful documentary investigates the methods and philosophy of headteacher Duncan Harper and his staff at New Woodlands Primary School in the London Borough of Lewisham. They strive to provide education for the 60 young boys who have been deemed very difficult to cope with in the 72 mainstream primary schools in the area. Some pupils are as young as five years old and they are all children who have been excluded and challenging behaviour.
