A question of sport
Description
Angela Sidgreaves teaches A level sports science at Runshaw College in Leyland, Lancashire. She takes an AS level class on some of the theoretical aspects of outdoor sports recreation. The students cover a lot of ground, but the lesson is dominated by a traditional question and answer technique. In a coaching session with Head of Department Russell Lawrence and a senior teacher, Angela is encouraged to take some risks and experiment with other questioning techniques. In a follow up lesson, Angela tries three different approaches to questioning students: a team based quiz, structured work sheets and the use of mini white boards. The variety works well and the students enjoy the lesson, but Angela feels she is taken out of her comfort zone and finds it more difficult than she expected.
