Description

The dusty South African townships contain not one single theater for the eight million people who live in them. Nor are the arts taught in the black schools. But a flood of creativity fueled by protest and hope finds expression in every available space - the streets, backyards, garages and empty school rooms. Hundreds of "culture clubs" sprang up after the Children's Uprising in 1976, providing a focal point for street education. Reminiscent of Serafina, this production captures the infectious spirit and uncontainable energy of the dance, poetry, theater and music of the townships. Despite the violence and death that is a part of everyday life, the performers celebrate their freedom and their hopes for a united country.
