Description

New research at the National Maritime Museum has revealed that the records for HMS Bellerophon, a uniquely detailed. Unlike other ships, Bellerophon's logbook describes both the nationality and the skin color of every sailor onboard. Bellerophon was a very cosmopolitan ship with a number of different nationalities onboard and we have pinpointed 12 foreign nationalities represented here in the document. They range from Swedes , Danes, Portuguese, West Indians , Americans , Indians and even Frenchmen. It details how they came aboard, where they were watched, where they recorded their duties, and their previous occupations. It allows us to identify what they did and allows us to identify what happened to them. By combining this information with contemporary accounts written by officers, it's possible to reconstruct the role of HMS Bellerophon's multinational crew, at the Battle of Trafalgar.
