An acclaimed portraitist, a distinguished history painter, the creator of powerful, massive sculptures, and a mystical, symbolist visionary, Watts was hailed as “England’s Michelangelo.” Yet in the twentieth century his critical reputation fell away, and his bold, often brilliant work is only now being rediscovered. Produced alongside centenary exhibitions at Tate and the National Portrait Gallery, this film explores the artist’s works and remarkable life. Some of his most striking portraits are of the dazzling actress Ellen Terry, to whom the middle-aged Watts was briefly married when she was 17. Curators Alison Smith and Barbara Bryant and biographer Veronica Franklin Gould discuss the beauty and diversity of Watts’ work, and the challenges it can pose for viewers today. The film also visits, with curator Richard Jefferies, the charmingly eccentric Watts Gallery at Compton in the Surrey countryside, which is the first purpose-built museum in Britain dedicated to the work of a single artist.","stream","[]","[]","['Art appreciation', 'Art and architecture', 'Artists']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_hx0d3ys5/version/100022/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=194790" "fod1000194789","","Encounters, The Meeting of Asia and Europe 1500-1800","","22 min 45 sec","[]","In the three centuries after the explorer Vasco de Gama first landed in India in 1498, meetings, trade and exchanges of all kinds flourished between the peoples of Europe and Asia. Gill lived an extraordinary and unconventional life, converting to Catholicism and creating austere monastic communities in Ditchling, Surrey, and at Capel y ffin in the Black Mountains in Wales. Yet for all the profound religious commitment in much of his art, his sculptures and drawings are often also untamed celebrations of sexuality and the female body. He died in 1940. From the end of the Second World War until his death in 1992, he created an extraordinary body of intense and uncompromising figure paintings and portraits. Drawing on diverse influences including Picasso, Velasquez’s portrait of Pope Innocent X, the photographs of Eadweard Muybridge and Sergei Eisenstein’s film Battleship Potemkin, Bacon undertook a pitiless analysis in paint of himself and his friends, of the human body, and of our place in a godless universe. This film explores many of his key canvases which have been newly filmed in HDTV. The works are complemented solely with Bacon’s own words, recorded by Derek Jacobi. For more than two decades, Deacon has created unique sculptures in a wide range of materials such as laminated wood, polycarbonate, leather, cloth and ceramic. The sculptures are defined by the space within and around them, as much as the solidity of their shape. Deacon’s dissatisfaction with the materials commonly associated with outdoor works drove him to explore the use of clay on a large-scale, overcoming technical difficulties to produce a body of work such as Another Kind Of Blue (2005) or Flower (2004) that illustrates his fascination with the relationship between the physical and the material. Deacon’s preoccupation with methods of construction and materials expresses the continuous development of his ideas on sculpture, the interaction of surface, skin and structure, mass and volume, space and its relations. Gillian Ayres defined her career by ranges of style and manner. In the sixties, she created glamorous and decorative images in keeping with the hedonistic mood of that time. In the seventies, Hans Hofmann inspired Ayres and returned back to an extreme and painterly extraction. Later in that decade Ayres moved back to oil painting and went on to develop her exclusive colorful style and has made an impressive mark on British art.","stream","[]","[]","['Art appreciation', 'Art and architecture', 'Artists']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_7scmpktw/version/100012/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=194741" "fod1000194740","","Michael Craig-Martin","","26 min 56 sec","['theEYE, Series 2: Painting and Video Art']","In 1973, Michael Craig-Martin exhibited a glass of water on a shelf, together with a printed text, and called the work An Oak Tree. With attitudes about death and end-of-life choices rapidly changing, 2018 saw the first time more Americans chose cremation over more expensive burials, disrupting the {20}16 billion a year funeral industry. As the baby boomer generation approaches death, more and more are rethinking the way end of life is recognized and are deciding to take control of what will happen when they die. Alternate Endings tells six stories of people nearing death, as well as family members of the recently deceased, who have chosen non-traditional burial options, from celebrations of life and living wakes to green burials, space burials and more. It's tempting at times to reach for a cup of coffee or an energy drink to give you a boost or to jumpstart your brain in the morning. Caffeine in reasonable doses is safe to consume. Americans drink more than 400 million cups of coffee each day. But while energy drinks often promise special formulas to get you going they mostly rely on large doses of caffeine. A common ingredient in energy drinks, guarana, contains twice as much caffeine as coffee, and others, such as ginseng, enhance the effect of stimulants. Caffeine can be addictive, and consuming energy drinks in large quantities or too often can cause anxiety, sleeplessness, or even leave you feeling more tired. The effects of energy drinks become even riskier when they're combined with alcohol.","stream","[]","[]","[]","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_zwsukzgu/version/100042/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=194628" "fod1000194627","","Dieting and Eating Disorders","","6 min 36 sec","[""Teens' Healthy Choices""]","Weight and fitness are concerns for many people. About 45 million Americans go on a diet ever year, and the number of obese people is rising around the world. At the same time, some people suffer from eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. It's clear that many people have health issues related to diet. Whether they eat too much or too little, eat the wrong things, or don't get enough activity to use the calories they consume, teens face many of these issues every day. Fad diets can be dangerous. Food choices can be limited. And body dysmorphic disorder can distort one's perception of their weight, leading people at healthy weights to ""see"" themselves as fat. As legend has it, two neighboring families in the backwoods of Appalachia waged a crude and bloody war against each other over a stolen hog, an illicit romance, and longstanding grudges. Yet the events that took place near the end of the 19th century between the Hatfields and McCoys are part of a much richer and more complex narrative of the American experience. Anderson Hatfield and Randolph McCoy, the patriarchs of the legendary feud, were entrepreneurs seeking to climb up from hardship after fierce economic competition and rapid technological change had turned their lives upside down. When members of both families took their grievances to court, their dispute escalated into a war between two families and a struggle between two states. The Feud reveals more than an isolated story of mountain lust and violence between ""hillbillies"" - the Hatfield-McCoy feud was a microcosm of the tensions inherent in the nation's rapid industrialization after the Civil War.","stream","[]","['United States']","['Industrial revolution']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_fgc4bwxn/version/100061/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=193063" "fod1000193062","","Why Bridges Collapse","","52 min 50 sec","[]","In 2018, Italy’s Morandi Bridge collapsed, killing 43 people.
