Some believe that primary school is the best age to learn foreign languages. It is also argued that motor skills should be learned at an early stage in our lives when we are more sensitive to learning. We used to believe that the bulk of learning could only take place in these development years but in fact what is known brain plasticity can take place until the day we die. In other words, learning is a constant process throughout human life and not reserved for those years at school. Dr. Frederic Dick from Birkbeck College explains how different stages of development affect our ability to learn. Experience expectant learning is the kind of common learning that a human or animal does quite early on, around birth or a little afterwards, whereas experience dependent development relates to changes in the brain induced by aspects of the environment.","stream","[]","[]","['Learning', 'Brain', 'Brain plasticity and reorganization']","['Nonfiction television programs', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004320xxx/1004320130/1004320130-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EDIV;1742655" "asp3166012-marc","","Sunday morning. Adults with invisible disabilities","","22 minutes","[]","At least 15% of the American population suffers from some type of disability that affects the way they live their daily lives yet many of these people suffer in silence because they are living with medically recognized conditions that are not readily apparent to others. America was founded on the concept of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The citizens of our nation have taken this seriously by creating public policies which include provisions for the use and development of groundbreaking tools for the education of individuals with learning disabilities to providing mandatory access for people with impaired mobility in public infrastructure and architecture. Accommodations that allow the visibly disabled to participate in mainstream society go almost unremarked. However, persons living with invisible disabilities, especially issues concerning mental health, are subjected to discrimination, prejudice, and stigma. Drowning in the Mainstream investigates the American cultural narrative and some of the common misconceptions attributed to people with conditions both mental and physical that are not readily apparent. The film seeks to initiate a dialogue on recognition and acceptance of this hidden community in order to level the playing field and aid in their pursuit of the American Dream.","stream","[]","[]","['People with disabilities', 'Disabilities']","['Documentary films', 'Ethnographic films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009664xxx/1009664877/1009664877-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3923968" "asp3964975-marc","","Against all odds. Made up of vivid real-world examples, our goal is to present statistics in the context of its contemporary use. Host Dr. Pardis Sabeti guides viewers through the wide range of statistical applications used by scientists, business owners, and even Shakespeare scholars, in their work and daily lives. Starting with descriptive statistics, the series continues through probability and inference. Each unit builds on preceding ones to expand students' statistical knowledge and solidify their understanding of how the concepts fit together. Statistical case studies range from finding patterns in lightning strikes, to linking DDT to the decline of peregrine falcons, to analyzing salaries to lobby for comparable pay for men and women. From here the children can see various villages and how they are connected. Deborah sets the class various challenges. They must note the details of the landscape as they journey up the hill and fill out worksheets and a sketch map once they have reached the top, based on their observations. The programme shows how the pupils are able to extend their knowledge of place and environment by studying their own locality. While much has been done in recent years in schools to make sure that teenage mothers get the right support at the earliest opportunity, little has been done to tackle the issue of teenage fathers. This may be put down to the fact that school aged fathers are almost invisible as a group, unlike their female counterparts, but the fact remains that we don't even know how many teenage fathers there are in this country. Society often regards teenage fathers as feckless individuals who get the girl pregnant and then leave them literally holding the baby. This is especially true for those women who live by the standards of traditional ideals in the Medina, the old city of Marrakech still enclosed by its ancient walls. This film attempts to say something about women such as Aisha and Hajiba -- two main characters -- who have experienced the hardships of life for women in such a society. Aisha's husband is an unskilled labourer and so she is forced to find work cooking and cleaning. Hajiba has been thrown out of her natal home by the brother who became household head on her father's death and she works as a dancer (shaykha) in a troupe entertaining men for money. For both of them the ideal of seclusion remains unrealisable, economic factors taking them out into the public world of men. The all-women film-crew were privileged to be allowed to attend a series of events involving women -- a visit to the steam baths, a religious celebration, a wedding, a visit to a shuwafa (fortune teller), a possession cult trance and a trip to the market to buy cloth. At many of these social events the guests entertain each other, and the film is remarkable not least for sequences showing women dancing and playing musical instruments, the brilliant colours of their dress and surroundings adding to the visual interest. Some Women of Marrakech is important for the manner in which it situates these 'ethnographic events' in relation to the division between women in the private world and men in the public world, providing an analysis which puts in the foreground questions of women's consciousness, sexuality and male/female division.","stream","[]","['Morocco']","['Women']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005108xxx/1005108219/1005108219-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ANTH;2193578" "asp3978582-marc","","Target child technique","","60 minutes","[]","This film will show you, step-by-step and in detail, how to carry out a target child observation. Initially shown as one continuous 10-minute piece in a classroom, you will see five children sitting around a table drawing. The objective is to examine social development. Two children, one socially outgoing, the other withdrawn are observed separately. Written observations are displayed on the screen after each minute. At the end of each ten minute observation there is an evaluation on screen that interprets the observation. The children’s drawings are also shown and evaluated. Watching the sequences repeatedly offers you an opportunity to practice and really get to grips with this technique. So when young children start off in Nursery and Reception, planning for literacy is a priority heavily dependent on their support staff's skills and commitment. In the programme we highlight moments in the teaching assistants' routine that show the breadth of the work they undertake e.g. making observations; play-based learning; EAL and special needs support; group & whole class work; team planning. All the TAs complete NVQ training which has helped professionalise their role. They lead phonics-based activities, organise the outdoor as well as the indoor classroom and accompany the YR on a zoo trip. Over time, the individual(s) involved in conflict may withdraw, becoming unproductive, unmotivated, and negative, or feel ostracized by co-workers. A review of the literature suggests that a plethora of information exists on group dynamics, reasons underlying conflict, conflict-management styles, and strategies for resolving conflict in groups. The conflict that is addressed in the literature, however, is usually short-term, situational conflict. No literature can be found that specifically addresses strategies for repairing workplace relationships that have been damaged over time from unresolved conflict, in particular, repairing relationships in educational settings and restoring individuals to motivated, contributing, respected members of the workplace team. Rites of Spring","1990","55 min","['Ethnographic video online, volume 2', 'Disappearing world']","The Kalasha are a tribal people, 3,000 strong, who live in the high valleys of the Hindu Kush mountains in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. The Kalasha are unique as a pagan people in this Islamic Republic. Joshi, their three day festival of song and dance, rituals and sacrifice and the re-telling of legends celebrates the coming of spring and encourages chivalrous romance between the sexes. All this provides a colourful focus for this film which explores the life and customs of the Kalasha. Before the menfolk depart to the high mountain pastures for the goats' summer grazing they present the women with goats' milk and bread that has been ritually purified. The women sing their thanks, praise and food and clamour for more. Whilst the men are away, the women stay in the narrow valleys, tending their tiny terraced fields of wheat, maize and millet. The Kalasha are worried that their way of life is under threat. The naively mortgaged land and walnut trees to their Chitrali Muslim neighbours, often in exchange for paltry loands. The Chitralis now covet the profits to be made from exploiting the cedar and holm oak which grow in the Kalasha valleys. The Pakistan government is aware of the problems and would like to safeguard the Kalashas' existence as a flourishing minority culture and tourist industry. But a future as a 'zoo people' within a tourist park does not appeal to the Kalasha. They are happy to welcome tourists at their festivities and they appreciate interest in their customs, but they are pragmatic about its value to them.","stream","[]","['Pakistan']","['Ethnology', 'Kalash (Pakistan people)']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005108xxx/1005108227/1005108227-disc001-file001-frame00555-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ANTH;2193674" "asp3259208-marc","","Gayelle. Kate trains with a top dragon-dancing troupe and discovers that not only is it a highly demanding kung fu-based art, it is also taken very seriously as Hong Kong people sincerely embrace the tradition of lucky lions and dragons at New Year. Meanwhile, the Hairy Bikers are in Beijing at the Temple Fair, where they explore a tradition from imperial China of the emperor starting the new year by renewing his mandate of heaven. Ant heads to China's frozen north east to Chagan Lake to discover the ancient art of fishing beneath the thick frozen surface. It is an extraordinary scene as the fishermen use centuries-old techniques to catch fish, a key part of any New Year's banquet. The culmination of the series is all about fireworks. Their loud bangs are believed to ward off evil spirits at this time of year. Ant goes to Liuyang, the city that produces nearly all of China's fireworks and many of those used in displays in British skies too. They even have a temple here to the inventor of fireworks, where workers still pay homage to the monk Li Tian, who started it all.
