That force is us. Humans are changing our planet so rapidly, it’s affecting earth’s life support systems: our weather, our oceans and the living world. To understand what is going wrong, we must look to the past. Earth has been through at least five mass extinction events, most of which have been caused by cataclysmic volcanic eruptions. It’s not the lava or ash that wiped out life, but an invisible gas released by volcanoes: carbon dioxide. Through compelling animal-led stories and expert interviews, we discover how CO2 is destabilising our planet. We meet rescued orphaned elephants in Kenya, victims of ever worsening droughts, and join ocean patrols off the coast of Gabon fighting to save endangered sharks. In the Amazon, we witness wildlife teams saving animals in the shrinking forests, and in San Diego we enter a cryogenic zoo preserving the DNA of endangered species before they become extinct. Almost every part of modern life depends on energy created by burning fossil fuels, and this produces CO2 in huge amounts. Humans are now acting like a super-volcano, releasing carbon dioxide at an even greater rate than the prehistoric mega-eruptions that extinguished life in the past. Globally, we now release 100 times more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than all of Earth's volcanoes combined. The greatest change to be made is in how we create energy, and the planet is brimming with natural power that can help us do just that. It’s these forces of nature - the wind, the sun, waves and geothermal energy - that hold the key to our future.","stream","[]","[]","['Ecological regions', 'Ecological zones', 'Environmental sciences', 'Biotic communities']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_hf47lmnb/version/100041/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=241068" "fod1000241067","","Oceans","","48 min 25 sec","[]","Oceans are the largest ecosystem on earth, covering two thirds of our world's surface and providing half the oxygen in our atmosphere. They are home to as much as 80 per cent of all life on earth, and nearly three billion people rely on them for their primary source of food. But our planet's oceans would be little more than stagnant wastelands, and life on earth - not just in the oceans - would cease to exist, were it not for one simple factor: a global network of powerful currents. Every drop of seawater on earth rides these currents, taking 1,000 years to complete a single circuit. Without the constant mixing of currents, tides and waves, our oceans would stop supporting life - and a healthy ocean is vital to a healthy planet.","stream","[]","[]","['Ecological regions', 'Ecological zones', 'Environmental sciences', 'Biotic communities']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_4kuule7w/version/100051/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=241067" "fod1000241066","","Weather","","48 min 43 sec","[]","Weather controls the distribution of freshwater on Earth, which in turn shapes the lives of animals in diverse habitats around the globe.","stream","[]","[]","['Ecological regions', 'Ecological zones', 'Environmental sciences', 'Biotic communities']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_4icv35d8/version/100051/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=241066" "fod1000241065","","The Sun","","49 min 6 sec","[]","From the frozen poles to the searing deserts, this episode shows how animals have come up with strategies to survive the uneven amounts of sunlight that fall on our planet.","stream","[]","[]","['Ecological regions', 'Ecological zones', 'Environmental sciences', 'Biotic communities']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_ej77jd7z/version/100051/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=241065" "fod1000241064","","Volcano","","51 min 28 sec","[]","A look at how without volcanoes, there would be no life on Earth. For the first time, we meet the entire penguin family - all 18 species. This colourful cast of characters may seem familiar, but their incredible diversity won't fail to surprise. New Zealand's lush green forests might not be the first place you would expect to find penguins, but it was here the penguin family first evolved 60 million years ago, and there are now more species living here than anywhere else on earth. One quirky-looking resident is the Snares penguin, which likes nothing more than a spa treatment. In Cape Town, the African penguin has adapted to the modern world, strolling the city streets with all the other commuters. And, against all the odds, one of the smallest members in the family, the Galapagos penguin, has found a way to survive the sweltering heat of the equator. One of the biggest secrets to the penguin success story is their remarkable parenting skills. Adelie penguins perform the longest penguin migration on earth, over 6,000 miles, to find the perfect nesting site. Ninety-nine per cent of them return to the same nests each year, but after a hard winter their stone nests need some serious renovation. Other species are sneakier, stealing their neighbours stones the moment they turn their backs. The fastest penguin on the planet is the gentoo, reaching speeds of 22mph and diving to 200 metres. Short feet that act like rudders and a streamlined body allows them to shoot through the water, while fused muscular wings act like paddles. Penguins are supremely adapted to an aquatic life, spending 75 per cent of their lives in water, but all penguins have to walk at some point, so to get around they have developed the infamous waddle. This bizarre locomotion may look inefficient, but surprisingly it actually works in their favour. Whilst we get 65 per cent of the energy back with each step, penguins can get up to 80 per cent, so the waddle is more efficient that our own walk.","stream","[]","[]","['Animals', 'Life sciences', 'Biodiversity', 'Biology', 'Evolution (Biology)', 'Animal diversity', 'Zoology']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_7sp2wvge/version/100051/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=241063" "fod1000241062","","Panorama, Fighting Coronavirus - The Scientific Battle","","29 min 21 sec","[]","As politicians decide how and when to lift the lockdown, Justin Rowlatt reports from the scientific frontline, finding out how science can help us defeat the virus. He was, like many Iraqi teenagers at that time, infatuated by the West. But while many of his generation grew up enjoying songs by the Backstreet Boys, Waleed formed Iraq’s first heavy metal band. Compared to the American movies Waleed and his friends enjoyed, life under Saddam was oppressive, fuelled by fear and paranoia. If war meant life would eventually be more like the way it was in the movies, then in Waleed’s words, ‘let’s get this s**t done'. Um Qusay, a farmer’s wife from a small village near Tikrit, was under no illusions about the cruelty of Saddam’s regime. That did not mean however that she wanted a foreign army to invade her country to dispose of him. There were benefits to living in a police state. The streets were very safe, and if you did not oppose the government directly, you were free to live how you wished. Life might not have been perfect, but many felt that a war with America would be something that Iraq would not survive. As the statue to their former dictator falls in Firdos Square, there is a real sense of hope felt by many Iraqis. Maybe, just maybe, Iraq would emerge a better country - perhaps even as one of the best countries in the world. That was the very real hope of Ahmed Al Bashir. At the heart of the story is a group of young mothers with children with hand and feet deformities fighting hard for answers, a ruthless local council and a tenacious human rights lawyer who took on a near-impossible ten-year battle. A Watford solicitor, Des Collins, discovered the story and approached the mothers. He won their trust and took on the case. Ten years after the mothers' battle began, the case went to court. The whole case rested on the science put forward by the expert witnesses. In July 2009, the judge ruled that the council had ignored all of their professional advice and acted illegally in the way that it moved and disposed of the toxic waste from the British Steel site. Dr Michael Mosley embarks on an immersive journey to Britain's opioid frontline and meets patients struggling with addiction and GPs fighting a constant battle to help those suffering from chronic pain. He also uncovers worrying evidence of people abusing over-the-counter opioids and discovers how easy it is to buy strong opioids online. Nearly six million people in England and Wales were prescribed an opioid last year. Michael wants to uncover how and why we are consuming twice the amount of opioids as 20 years ago, especially when the scientific evidence he encounters disturbingly suggests that for the majority of people taking them for chronic pain, these drugs mostly don't even work. Though a vital tool in our doctor's armoury to combat acute pain and in cancer and end-of-life care, the Public Health England report revealed that more than half a million people have been on opioids for more than three years. Michael cautions that people taking these drugs should not suddenly stop taking them. Nevertheless, as he discovers, long-term or high-dose use does leave them exposed to greater risk of side effects including dependency, addiction and even accidental death by overdose. As many as 28 million Britons endure chronic pain - and if we are to kick what seems like a dangerous national opioid habit, Michael believes that the critical issue is deprescribing. Millions now require help coming off opioids and drug-free alternatives to them. For Michael, this is nothing short of a challenge as important as the fight against cancer and heart disease. So how much do people on the ground really know about these powerful painkillers, some of which, including fentanyl, can be many times stronger than heroin?","stream","[]","[]","['Drug utilization', 'Medical care', 'Health', 'Drugs']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_4h51s9ez/version/100041/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=241041" "fod1000241040","","Horizon, 7.7 Billion People and Counting","","51 min 11 sec","[]","By 2050 there could be 10 billion people living on the planet. The Duke of Cambridge has spent the past year campaigning to change attitudes to mental health in Britain. Spurred on by the fact that suicide is the biggest killer of young men in this country, he wants to use football as a way to get men talking and to break the taboo that surrounds mental health. As a real fan of the sport, William has seen the way men express their feelings at football games. Now he wants to help men show the same passion and openness away from the game. The film follows William as he meets players and fans from grassroots to the elite of the game and openly discusses their mental health challenges. Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart explains how he has learnt to cope with difficulties at the very top of the game, and a group of bereaved fathers reveal how they use their local football team as a support network and safe space to talk. Former Premier League footballer Marvin Sordell opens up about his struggles with depression, while Chelsea manager Frank Lampard compares life now with his early experiences of professional football. As well as campaigning to change attitudes today, William explores aspects of British history that have helped create the culture of silence around this issue. Giles has been asked by good friend Matt Hunt, CEO of Free the Bears, to help for 12 months and is not long into his role when he has to step in to help Mary, a five-month-old sun bear. Mary was rescued after her mother was killed in the wild and was spotted on the back of a truck for sale into the illegal wildlife trade. Fragile and malnourished, she lives with Giles and Matt at home while she needs around the clock specialist care. The other part of Giles’ role is to help build the new bear sanctuary, where Mary will be going as soon as her enclosure is completed. With 31 bears at the sanctuary already, the team are under tremendous pressure as more bears come in. Across Asia, bears in the illegal wildlife trade are sold as trophy pets, used for their body parts in restaurants and processed for traditional Asian medicine. The most valued part of a bear is their gallbladder, an organ that stores bile which is a digestive fluid that helps break down fat and is thought to have medicinal qualities. Over 10,000 bears across Asia are kept in cages in bear farms so their bile can be extracted to meet demand. Giles and the team are determined to put a stop to this in Laos and are working with the government to one day close down these bear bile farms.","stream","[]","[]","['Environmental law', 'Conservation of natural resources', 'Environmental protection', 'Environmental policy', 'Environmental sciences']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_o9p7djl2/version/100051/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=241014" "fod1000241013","","BBC Proms, 2020, Last Night of the Proms","","1 hr 48 min 59 sec","[]","Katie Derham hosts the climax of the world’s greatest classical music festival, the Last Night of the Proms, live from the Royal Albert Hall, drawing a unique season of live performances to a celebratory close. Sir David starts out at the North Pole, standing on sea ice several metres thick, but which scientists predict could be open-ocean within the next few decades. The Arctic has been warming at twice the global average so Sir David heads out with a Norwegian team to see what this means for polar bears. He comes face to face with a tranquilised female and discovers that mothers and cubs are going hungry as the sea ice on which they hunt disappears. In Canada, Inuit hunters have seen with their own eyes what scientists have seen from space - the Arctic Ocean has lost 30% of its summer ice cover over the last 30 years. For some, the melting sea ice will allow access to trillions of dollar worth of oil, gas and minerals. For the rest of us, it means the planet will get warmer as sea ice is important to reflect back the sun's energy. Next Sir David travels to see what's happening to the ice on land: in Greenland, we follow intrepid ice scientists as they study giant waterfalls of meltwater, which are accelerating iceberg calving events, and ultimately leading to a rise in global sea level. Temperatures have also risen in the Antarctic - Sir David returns to glaciers photographed by the Shackleton expedition and reveals a dramatic retreat over the past century. Chiaureli was one of Stalin's favorite filmmakers for his propaganda films and emerged as one of the most important Soviet directors and cinematographers in the 1940s. The footage shot by Chiaureli was intended by the Soviet authorities to be the definitive account of history’s greatest loss. Ranging widely across the Soviet Union and points beyond – from Warsaw to Moscow to Beijing and Korean War battlefronts, and culminating in the dictator’s colossal Red Square funeral – this video captures the pomp and intrigue-packed Soviet world of High Stalinism at its zenith. Long buried in Soviet-era archives, and unearthed by Kirtadze and her team, the footage jarringly returns us to a time when the slogan “Stalin is always with us” radiated hope and confidence in a bright Soviet future and offers insights into Soviet propaganda films of that era. It uses the official Russian State Radio Broadcast as the narrative track and features English narrative and voice-over.","stream","[]","['Russia (Federation)']","['Communication', 'World history', 'Mass media']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_wiget678/version/100021/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=240960" "fod1000240959","","Mark Nadler, I'm a Stranger Here Myself","","1 hr 28 min 40 sec","['Mark Nadler']","This video features a production of Mark Nadler's Off-Broadway cabaret performance I'm a Stranger Here Myself. But the worst thing was constant exposure to the chemical phosphorous. So sarah took part in one of the first workers’ marches to improve conditions.Angus Innes was a Scottish navvy who blasted tons of rock from the highlands to Glasgow, to construct an ambitious water channel. Tony discovers his secret: a hearty breakfast of six slices of bacon, a loaf of bread, a can of condensed milk and two pints of beer. The Victorian Age was powered by coal, but amongst its miners were 5,000 women and children. Betty Harris worked for her husband underground at Knowles Pitt near Bolton, pulling coal trucks. He’d regularly beat her for ‘being too slow’. But Betty did have one person on her side: Queen Victoria! The increasing demand from busy Victorians to get around town faster led to the rise of the London cabby and the Hansom cab. Victorian cabbies were often drunk in the pub but some, like John Cockram, made use of new ‘cab shelters’ which served up tea, steak and the morning papers. Tony meets Esther Brown, one of the first employees of ‘Michael Marks’ Penny Bazaar’, effectively the very first ‘Marks & Spencer’. Esther tutored her customers in the modern art of ‘browsing’, although – as a woman - she may not have been trusted to handle their money. And finally, there’s Edwin Waugh, a man, miserable with his job and his wife. His only therapy was drink until in the 1840s a new phenomenon appears: He takes the train on a day trip to Blackpool, along with 2000 others.","stream","[]","['Europe']","['World history']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_5ch5uap3/version/100061/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=239514" "fod1000239513","","History of Britain, Episode 1","","44 min 24 sec","['History of Britain']","Tony Robinson takes us back 500 years, to life under Tudor king, Henry VIII. Tudor towns were evil-smelling places but amongst the smelliest homes would have been that of the local ‘knacker’. Tony introduces Thomas Grimes, who chopped up dead animals to make clothes, shoes or glue. But thanks to Henry VIII, who executed more bigwigs than the other Tudor monarchs put together, there was another need for Thomas’s skills: as an executioner! Next, Tony meets Richard Roose, who rose from pot washer to cook, for the Bishop of Rochester. The copious meat dishes that Richard prepared for the Bishop, would have been heaven to ordinary Tudors. Unfortunately, Richard’s boss fell out with the king over his affair with Anne Boleyn and Richard got caught up in it all and was boiled alive for his troubles.Farmer Richard Jenkynson and his wife Anne lived in Yorkshire, ploughing the fields, cooking and weaving. But poor farmers like Richard had to fight for their king when ordered. And suddenly he and his family found themselves off to war, to fight the Scots at the Battle of Flodden.Feisty Elynour Rummynge, was an ‘alewife’, brewing ale and running a pub in Leatherhead. Elynour’s brew became so famous that a poem was written about it, but for all the wrong reasons: it was rumoured to contain chicken droppings! Tony gets on board Henry VIII’s warship, Mary Rose, to meet sailor, ‘John’, one of 500 seamen who died when it sank in 1545, in a battle with the French. John had a hellish job, stumbling around in the dark with a bucket of hot pitch, trying to keep the ship waterproofed. The ship sank so fast that John had no chance of getting off. A disaster that foreshadowed Henry’s own death, just two years later.","stream","[]","['Europe']","['World history']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_ykr122fm/version/100031/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=239513" "fod1000239511","","The Fifth Question, Why is this Passover Different?","","40 min 2 sec","[]","For 2,700 years, Jews in Iran have celebrated Passover to commemorate the Exodus of their ancestors from Egypt. Iranian Jews residing in Los Angeles have experienced another exodus in their lifetimes, leaving Iran after the Islamic revolution in 1979. The Fifth Question examines the Persian Passover tradition in the Iranian-American Jewish community in Los Angeles, reflecting on intergenerational continuity through the eyes of three generations. Parents and grandparents born and raised in Iran and college-age youth born and raised in Los Angeles share memories and experiences through candid interviews and intimate moments preparing symbolic foods and participating in the Seder ritual. This cross-cultural exploration of relationships between generations addresses issues of cultural identity and first generation immigrants.","stream","[]","[]","['Judaism', 'Spiritual life', 'Religion']","[]","https://cfvod.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/1_46kmiidu/version/100051/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=239511" "fod1000239510","","Between the Shells","","35 min 47 sec","[]","For over fifty years, Mr. Moosa Haim (Jalil) Harooni has been transforming mere seashells into heartfelt characters from the Old Testament, Persian Mythology and legendarykings and poets such as Cyrus the Great, Reza Shah, Ferdowsi, Hafez and Omar Khayyam.
