It spans centuries and continents and is full of its share of heroes, villains, and sudden vertiginous twists. This episode follows that centuries-long search, but centers on the story of Sidney Farber, who, defying conventional wisdom in the late 1940s, introduces the modern era of chemotherapy, eventually galvanizing a full-scale national “war on cancer.” Interwoven with Farber's narrative is the contemporary story of little Olivia Blair, who at 14-months old is diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which spreads to her brain and spinal column. The film follows her as she and her parents struggle with the many hardships and decisions foisted upon a cancer patient. They were to return to their communities and receive supportive care. But that support never came through. The patients ended up in back streets all over America. This report follows some of these mental patients. We learn that profitable adult homes have sprung up which are often inadequate and resented by the community. Sometimes former patients are housed in nursing homes converted to locked psychiatric centers. Some communities resort to locking up the mentally ill in jail. Others leave them to wander the streets. Charles Darwin guessed our ancestors simply found smooth skin more attractive, and over millions of years of selection, hairy humans lost out. But while the struggle to attract a mate explains why humans are still hairless, it doesn't explain why we lost our fur in the first place. Of mixed race and cultural heritage, he was born in 1902 in Sangua La Grande, Cuba to a mother who was a descendent of slaves and a father who was a Chinese immigrant. In his youth he was exposed to the rich heritage of African, Santaria and Confucian traditions. These traditions affected him deeply and are reflected in his art which is in the collections of major museums here and abroad. This film follows Lam from student days in Havana through his development as an artist in Europe where he became a close friend of Picasso and other luminaries. Upon returning to Cuba, Lam rediscovered his roots, became a leader in the Negritude movement, and produced his most famous work, ""The Jungle."" This richly illustrated film uses Lam s paintings and writing along with interviews with authorities on art and Caribbean culture to trace the evolution of a unique and truly multicultural twentieth century artist. ""The film explores the importance of Lam's place in 20th century art and provides important historical, religious and artistic information."" It focuses on Malaysia, home to 12 million Muslims and 6 million Chinese. Islam bans the eating of pork, considering it unclean, while the Chinese have treasured pork for thousands of years. The ancient Chinese character for ""home"" was a pig. For the Chinese the pig is a symbol of prosperity and all celebrations involve a pig roast. ""Pig Commandments"" outlines the ways in which the Muslim prohibition to eat pork affects the relationship between the Chinese and Muslims in this part of the world. There is legislation to keep pig farms away from the Muslim population. Many Chinese in Malaysia have converted to Islam. For them, the Koran has been translated into Chinese; and four chapters of the Koran deal with the prohibition to eating pork. One Chinese convert describes the problem with eating with her family. Only once a year when the Chinese celebrate the New Year with a vegetarian meal, can she join her family at dinner. ""The Pig Commandments"" shows how dietary laws can divide people or being them closer together. The five boys and three girls took part in a video workshop at their local government primary school. The three films they made consist of one made jointly by all the children in the group, exploring the life of their village, and two films made by individual children. The first of these is about the family of a girl, Kiran, who herd goats as part of their livelihood. The film focuses closely on Kiran's relationship with her grandparents. The second individual film is by Mayank, a boy whose father is one of the barbers in the village. It provides an affectionate portrait of his father as well as giving insights into the day-to-day home life of his family. The workshop was coordinated by renowned ethnographic filmmaker David MacDougall as part of the 'Childhood and Modernity' Project, supported by The Australian National University and the Australian Research Council. The Delwara workshop was made possible by the assistance and cooperation of the Delwara Upper Primary School and Seva Mandir, a non-government organization providing assistance to communities throughout southern Rajasthan. The films are in Mewari, with English subtitles. The three films are as follows:Our Delwara (19 min.)This film, made collectively by all eight village schoolchildren, presents a wide-ranging view of village activities, from the children's various viewpoints. Most of the activities are domestic - clothes washing, food preparation, cooking, tending animals - but there are also glimpses of the kinds of economic work that occur in village homes, such as embroidery and pottery-making. There are also more public economic activities such as scenes in a barber shop and a shoe-repair business. An interest in childhood activities is evident, including games and school homework, but the forces of modernity that are changing village life are also represented: new building construction and the vaccination of babies by public health workers. The film ends with signs of the religious diversity of the village. With admirable economy, this film presents an intimate view of the realities of Indian village life today. Our Life with Goats by Kiran Khartik (12 min.)Kiran begins with scenes inside her own house, but she soon moves outdoors to focus on the goats, who are an important part of her family's livelihood. Her grandfather and grandmother have a major role in taking care of the goats, and one can see in the way she films them that she has a close relationship with them both. In a key scene she films a conversation with her grandmother who, although wary of modern technology, is nevertheless curious about Kiran's filmmaking activities. The film is notable for a scene in which Kiran's grandfather drives their small herd of goats through the village, down narrow lanes, past a group of card players, and into their enclosure. The film is made with affection, understanding, and moments of quiet humor - a view of village life as only a young girl could see it.Mayank's Family by Mayank Ved (18 min.)This intimate and engaging film began as a portrait of Mayank's father, a village barber, but soon expanded to include the rest of his family and wider scenes of village life. His father's day begins in the early morning as he eats breakfast, dresses, and performs puja to a Hindu god at the family altar. He opens his barber shop beside a busy market and a highway that links the village of Delwara with the other villages and towns of Rajasthan. As the day progresses, he chats with clients and gives haircuts, shaves, and head massages.Meanwhile at home Mayank's mother and other relatives carry on the work of the household. The film contains remarkably informal and playful scenes of family life, usually involving Mayank's younger brother. The film ends with his brother at the barber shop, having his hair cut by his father.","stream","[]","['Rajasthan (India)', 'India']","['Children', 'Families']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007858xxx/1007858081/1007858081-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3236485" "asp1738793-ediv","","Becoming outstanding - primary","2010","4 min","['Becoming outstanding - primary']","Becoming Outstanding gives you the opportunity to explore what outstanding teaching and learning looks like, and assess yourself against our seven key features. Hurmuti is the eldest wife in an extended family, but she has had a long-term -- and well-known -- affair with another man in the village. The film examines her conflicts with her extended family and with the all-male Islamic Village Council over her own conduct and over her insistence on the right to arrange the marriages of her pre-pubescent daughters. As Hurmuti's fascinating story unfolds it is interwoven with scenes that illustrate the process of growing up female in the village: the play of children; the talk and the duties of adolescent girls; marriage customs; dowry issues; relationships with mothers-in-law; rights to land ownership; and even spirit possessions.Viewers will experience a wide range of emotions, grapple with an array of stimulating questions, and in the end be forced to consider how Hurmuti's life options would have been different if she had been born male. The film is based on ethnographic research carried out in Rajasthan over the past two decades by the producer, Prof. Erin Moore, of the Dept. of Anthropology, Univ. of Southern California. An in-depth Instructor's Guide sheds additional light on the issues covered in the film and provides background information on Indian and Muslim social and legal customs.","stream","[]","['Rajasthan (India)', 'India']","['Women, Meo', 'Sex role', 'Panchayat', 'Patriarchy', 'Dispute resolution (Law)', 'Meo (Indic people)']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007608xxx/1007608521/1007608521-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3190409" "asp2300789-ctv3","","Attachment issues with step families","2012","60 min","[""Helping today's parents : practical new approaches for good parenting in challenging times"", 'Counseling and therapy in video, volume 3']","Sensitize yourself to the distinct emotional challenges stepfamilies face and how to help them meet their challenges to healthy development by: Understanding the insider-outsider dynamics and loyalty conflicts inherent to the stepfamily experience; Helping stepparents recognize the limitations of their roles in discipline and the best ways to develop one-to-one relationships with their stepchildren; Learning three levels of intervention with stepfamilies: Psychoeducation, skill-building, and exploring intrapsychic issues; Exploring effective strategies for handling conflicts with ex-spouses that can keep children out of the middle; Mastering the “soft-hard-soft” approach to framing problems and addressing difficult issues in navigating the potential minefield of stepfamily relationships.","stream","[]","[]","['Attachment behavior', 'Stepfamilies', 'Family psychotherapy']","['Filmed interviews']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005024xxx/1005024327/1005024327-disc001-file001-frame00255-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CTIV;2300789" "asp2232505-flon","","Out of print","2013","55 min","[]","Out of Print narrated by Meryl Streep, draws us into the topsy-turvy world of words, illuminating the turbulent and exciting journey from the book through the digital revolution. This is a film about one immigrant family’s means of survival, as much as it is a story about work, filial piety, sacrifice and the meaning of choice.“This film will stimulate discussion and provoke a critical re-examination of both the partial truths and distortions in stereotypes of Asian American women and families.”-Sylvia Yanagisako, Professor of Anthropology, Stanford University“Student discussions will be stimulated by Maythane Woo’s contradictory impulses. She is a devoted daughter who sacrificed her youth and her chances to attend college to work in the family fortune cookie factory. Now in her late thirties and still single, she lives with her aging parents so that she can take care of them. At the same time, she longs to express herself - in art, in dancing, in telling viewers the story of her life. This provocative film is appropriate for history, anthropology, sociology, psychology, women’s studies, and ethnic studies classes.” -Elaine H. Kim, Professor of Asian American Studies, University of California at Berkeley“Through May’s own wit, humor and creative genius, she transformed her family’s fortune cookie-making – at least in memory – into folk art. The deep message lies in the film’s portrayal of how she grapples with the conflicting challenges of a “we” communal culture and those of a highly individuated culture of ‘I’s.’” -Pacific News Service“This film is unique in that it addresses the experiences of women of color as affected by the constraints of societal and economic discrimination, and intrafamily role expectations in an extremely thoughtful, nuanced and aesthetic framework.” -Margaret M. How can we provide health care for the 37 million Americans who currently lack insurance? How can we provide peace of mind for 50 million Americans whose insurance is so inadequate that a serious illness would cause financial ruin? With medical expenses rising at twice the rate of inflation, how can soaring costs be controlled? This program presents the human side of these complex and controversial dilemmas by considering the perspectives of the three major players in the health care debate - patients, providers, and payers. The first of What s Ailing Medicine's three segments deals with the plight of the uninsured. In the second segment, the film examines the vulnerability of several ""underinsured"" patients who experience a financial calamity along with a catastrophic illness. The final segment investigates the wasteful and sometimes dangerous overuse of medical procedures such as cardiac catheterization and coronary artery bypass surgery. After the patients, their families, doctors, employers, and insurers present their frustrations with our health care system, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Senator Robert Dole respond to the documentary s personal profiles in order to illuminate the potential impact of health care reform. In addition, Harvard University health policy expert Robert Blendon, who has done extensive opinion polling on American attitudes about health care, gives voice to the priorities and concerns of the public. Hunchback is a huge production: the sets depicting 15th-century Paris covered nineteen acres of Universal Pictures’ back lot and included the façade of Notre Dame Cathedral. Filming took six months and the climactic sequence employed two thousand extras, but it’s Lon Chaney’s performance that makes the character unforgettable. The Hunchback of Notre Dame premiered at New York’s Astor Theatre on September 2, 1923. The success of the film was immediate; it made Carl Laemmle and Universal Pictures a fortune, and turned Lon Chaney into a screen legend. This edition is mastered from a multi-tinted 16mm print struck in 1926 from the original camera negative. (The film apparently does not survive in 35mm). Visible wear in the source material is diminished with a moderate amount of digital restoration. It is pictorially much better than earlier video editions and represents the best condition in which this landmark film survives today. A new symphonic score arranged by Donald Hunsberger was recorded in the Czech Republic by full orchestra conducted by Robert Israel. This edition produced by David Shepard and Serge Bromberg; Special Contents Copyright 1991, 1996, 2007, 2014 by Film Preservation Associates, Inc. Many conservative religious groups oppose it on the grounds that using embryonic stem cells involves destroying a life at its earliest stage. Researchers and doctors working with embryonic stem cells, specifically with the Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) procedure, insist that those early stem cells are not human life. The researchers contend that they would never use the DNA in the stem cells to create human life -- only to conduct biomedical research that they hope will lead to cures for such maladies as cancer, Parkinson s disease, Alzheimer s, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and spinal cord injuries. Embryonic stem cells offer much hope for medical advancement because of their ability to grow into almost any kind of cell and replicate any organ in the body. This documentary looks at one state, Missouri, as the state senate deals with contentious legislation introduced to eliminate altogether SCNT, the most promising form of stem cell research. This film culminates with a ballot initiative campaign to approve an amendment to the Missouri constitution that would protect all forms of stem cell research that are allowed by the federal goverment. The documentary explores both sides of the issue and challenges assumptions as it shows the passions and principles of patients, advocates, politicians, scientists and religious leaders. A great soul","","104 minutes","[]","The story of the life of a remarkable man, who helped inspire and liberate a nation. Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe was a leading figure in South Africa's history, and the film by auteur Mickey Madoda Dube breaks the mystifying silence around his extraordinary contribution to shaping not only South Africa but also the thinking across the continent and the diaspora. Robert Sobukwe demonstrated integrity, courage, honesty, humanity and true leadership, qualities that resonate clearly today. Sobukwe's decisive action on 21 March 1960 led to the massacre of Sharpeville, where police fired on unarmed peaceful protesters and shot many of them in the back. Sobukwe gave Pan Africanism new life, paving the way for the emergence of Steve Biko, and the student uprising of 16 June 1976. Living with corruption","2008","49 min","[]","In this eye-opening film, the award-winning African journalist Sorious Samura reveals how corruption has become normal and accepted in Africa -- it is one of the root causes of Africa's many problems. Sadly, most aid money given by the West never reaches those it is meant to help; it gets siphoned off by corrupt governments. This film provides a sober portrait of how modern Africa really works. Samura moves into one of the largest slums in Africa, Kibera in Kenya, to reveal the relentlessness of everyday corruption, where the poor have to bribe just to survive. Bribery is the modus operandi for obtaining basics such as hospital appointments, building their shacks, getting work and staying out of jail. Samura returns home to Sierra Leone to live with a friend and her 10 children. Here widespread corruption led to a brutal and bloody civil war that ended in 2002. The country had the chance to start again but Samura describes how a seven-year aid project, led by the British, has failed because of corruption and a lack of understanding from Western donors. In the slums there is no water or electricity and Sierra Leoneans still have the worst life expectancy on the planet. Even a 9-year old must bribe his teachers just to be taught. Samura claims that, in many parts of Africa, school is a place where children learn how to bribe and to use power and status to get what they want.","stream","[]","['Africa']","['Corruption']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1003830xxx/1003830941/1003830941-disc001-file001-frame00075-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1650400" "asp1655068-flon","Caldwell, John","Freak street to Goa. The Wonder of Animals celebrates the most successful animal groups on Earth - from apes to elephants, ants to bears. Discover why, despite appearing clumsy and comical, penguins actually have an anatomy that is perfect for their environment and how the dominance of big cats is down to more than just their brawn. New science is combined with the very latest animal behaviour research and extensive BBC natural history HD archive footage to build a complete picture of each animal, revealing how its unique characteristics have contributed to its success. Bears can live in practically every habitat on Earth, from tropical jungles to the Arctic Ocean. Wherever they are found, they are capable of surviving extreme conditions and extracting the highest-quality food. Detailing the latest research, Chris Packham explores the specialised adaptations that have enabled bears to thrive, including how a polar bear's hollow fur allows it to feed throughout the gruelling Arctic winter, whilst a state of 'walking hibernation' sees it through the summer months.","stream","[]","[]","['Animals', 'Bears', 'Animal behavior']","['Wildlife television programs', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009922xxx/1009922789/1009922789-disc001-file001-frame00240-size-fit-1024x578.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4035854" "asp99412002900971","","OWTU People's Institution. The module uses fictional case studies to demonstrate how to cater for the differing abilities and needs in a classroom. There is an in-depth look at a fictional pupil with SEN and a consideration of some differentiation strategies that could be used to support their learning. A fictional gifted and talented pupil allows teachers to demonstrate how to ensure they are stretched in lessons, with real-life examples of these techniques in action.
