Helen Castor reveals how in the Middle Ages marriage was actually much easier to get into than today - you could get married in a pub or even a hedgerow simply by exchanging words of consent - but from the 12th century onwards the Catholic Church tried to control this conjugal free-for-all. This innovative ""frame story"" owes its classic standing and impact to the diversity both of the narrators and of the styles of tales they tell. In this program, expert commentators Dr. Christiania Whitehead and Dr. Peter Mack, both of the University of Warwick, discuss the tradition of 14th-century poetry, the General Prologue, Chaucer's social grouping of the pilgrims and the themes they explore, and the poem as a reflection of Medieval English society. Dramatic reenactments of the pilgrims on horseback and numerous period images help bring the tales to life.","stream","['Chaucer, Geoffrey']","[]","['English literature', 'English prose literature', 'British literature']","['Educational films']","https://cdnsecakmi.kaltura.com/p/1067292/sp/106729200/thumbnail/entry_id/0_nvjutahs/version/100001/width/320","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=https://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=102638&xtid=8657" "fod100086569","","Foreign Legions","","52 min 23 sec","[""The World's War: Forgotten Soldiers of Empire""]","In part two, historian David Olusoga explains how the First World War spread far beyond the mud and trenches of France and Belgium. This is their story and shows how, ultimately, victory lay not just in leaving the traditional confines of their lives behind and shouldering responsibility as never before, but culminated in women gaining the vote. The Enlightenment encouraged people to question authority and that included the Church's teachings on sex. In the late 17th century, prostitution and homosexuality openly flourished in western cities - an open affront to centuries of Christian teaching. At the same time, new forms of Protestantism, such as Methodism, began to question traditional Church teaching, giving leadership roles to women. In the Victorian age, sex became a subject for scientists to study, instead of a sin for the Church to condemn. Some Christian thinkers began to challenge the sexual status quo. Josephine Butler fought on behalf of prostitutes, while Bishop John Colenso argued that African converts should be allowed to continue their practice of polygamy. And in the mid 20th century, Christians were at the forefront of the successful campaign for the decriminalisation of homosexuality. But elsewhere, Church leaders railed against these changes.
