Using thousands of uncompromising and exclusive photographs taken by former US Marine Captain Brian Steidle during his role as a military observer with the African Union, THE DEVIL CAME ON HORSEBACK leads you through the tragic impact of an Arab government bent on destroying its black African citizens. As an official military observer, Steidle had access to parts of the country that no journalist could penetrate. He was unprepared for what he would witness and experience, including being fired upon, taken hostage, and being unable to intervene to save the lives of young children. Ultimately frustrated by the inaction of the international community, Steidle resigned and returned to the US to expose the images and stories of lives systematically destroyed. Haunted by what he has seen and the backlash against his advocacy efforts, Brian traveled to the refugee camps of Chad to reconnect with survivors of the violence he witnessed. As a Jew, she was often excluded from many circles that were kept homogeneous by a white, male, Protestant society. As the mother of two children, Greene faced a world hostile to women who wanted a family and a profession. Greene is a preeminent intellectual acknowledged internationally as an original thinker in the world of education. Board of Education. The East Baton Rouge Parish School District was forced to desegregate its schools in 1981 after a 25-year legal fight. But now, frustrated over the district's many low-performing schools, a group of mostly white, middle-class parents and business leaders are trying to break away and form a new city with its own separate schools, mirroring similar breakaway movements in cities around the country that critics say are reversing hard-fought civil rights gains. If the plan succeeds, the new district is expected to be more affluent and white, and will leave behind a population of mostly black students from low-income families. Omarina's Story - Also this hour: FRONTLINE continues to examine a groundbreaking effort to stem the dropout crisis in America's high-poverty schools based on the theory that the make-or-break moment for preventing kids from dropping out of high school actually happens in middle school. Drawing on recently declassified documents and interviews with prominent political leaders and CIA insiders, FRONTLINE reveals the many challenges to this version of history. Filmmaker Michael Kirk (United States of Secrets) investigates the agency's top-secret interrogation program: how it began, what it accomplished, and the bitter fight in Washington over the public outing of its existence. The film unspools the dueling versions of history laid out by the CIA, which maintains that its now officially shuttered program was effective in combating terrorism; and by the massive Senate torture report released in December of 2014, which found that the program was brutal, mismanaged, and--most importantly--didn't work. From the CIA's use of black site prisons in Thailand, Lithuania, Afghanistan and Poland, to its destruction of hundreds of hours of videotaped interrogations (and Congress's fury upon finding out), to the Senate's standoff with the CIA over the report, Secrets, Politics and Torture tells the dramatic inside story of one of the CIA's most controversial programs.","stream","['United States', 'Central Intelligence Agency']","['United States']","['Detention of persons', 'Torture', 'Extraordinary rendition']","['Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1007643xxx/1007643627/1007643627-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3233470" "asp3233466-marc","","Frontline. A photographer's journey. Pedro E. Guerrero","","56 minutes","['American masters']","The American Masters series and Latino Public Broadcasting's VOCES series join forces for the first time to explore the life and work of photographer Pedro E. Guerrero (September 5, 1917 - September 13, 2012), a Mexican American, born and raised in segregated Mesa, Arizona, who had an extraordinary international photography career.Filmmakers Raymond Telles and Yvan Iturriaga (Latino Americans) showcase an in-depth, exclusive interview with Guerrero alongside his photography to explore his collaborations with three of the most iconic American artists of the 20th century: architect Frank Lloyd Wright and sculptors Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson. Using his outsider's eye to produce insightful portraits of important modernist architecture, Guerrero became one of the most sought-after photographers of the 'Mad Men' era, yet his story is largely unknown. American Masters - Pedro E. Guerrero: A Photographer's Journey highlights the milestones in Guerrero's life: his serendipitous enrollment in photography classes, his 1939 meeting with Wright at Taliesin West (Scottsdale, AZ), his World War II service and his post-war magazine photography career in New York City, shooting interiors while his work with Wright continued. Settling in New Canaan, CT, Guerrero describes his life after Wright's death, his work with Calder and the end of his magazine assignments because of his vocal opposition to the Vietnam War. This led to more work with Calder, and eventually, Nevelson. After Nevelson's death, Guerrero, now 75 years old, returned to Arizona, where he lived until his death at age 95. Guerrero's second wife and archivist Dixie Legler Guerrero; Nevelson's granddaughter, sculptor Maria Nevelson; his friends, collaborators and architectural experts, including Martin Filler, also share insights and recollections. 'We at Latino Public Broadcasting are extremely pleased to partner with American Masters on this film,' said LPB Executive Director Sandie Viquez Pedlow. 'Pedro E. Guerrero is an important American artist whose work, until now, has been known to only a relatively small group of photography and architecture aficionados. Being showcased on American Masters provides a high visibility platform to share his remarkable story and brilliant photographs with the American public; we hope the broadcast will finally give him the national recognition that has been long overdue. ''We are thrilled to partner with Latino Public Broadcasting and VOCES to spotlight Pedro E. Guerrero's talent on American Masters. From the jungles of Guinea to the slums of Monrovia, Outbreak exposes tragic missteps in the response to the epidemic.
