A hired killer purchases acid for less than $1.00 and will throw a bottle of acid onto a person's face and body with the intent of disfiguring and disabling the victim forever. Reported acid attack victims in Uganda number at around five hundred, though thousands are undocumented and remain hidden in their villages outside of public view. Twelve acid attack survivors refused to remain hidden and isolated. Through the encouragement of Hanifa and Ritah, both acid attack survivors, they all met for the first time on June 25, 2014, in a small village in Uganda. This was the first time they removed their scarves, veils, and masks in public and shared their stories of survival and hopes for the future. The film ""Facing the Future"" captured this momentous day as each survivor bravely faced the camera to tell their story. They talked about their former lives, recalled their brutal attacks, and how they survived the painful journey back to recovery. They also spoke about the reasons behind such brutal attacks. Army rebels would attack and kill all who lived in the small villages and then burn their homes. They would find and capture young boys and force them to become child soldiers and young girls to be enslaved as child brides. Those who hid from the rebels and miraculously survived, would run through the northern Uganda bush for days in search of safety in the Internal Displaced Peoples Camps (IDPC). ""The Most Important Number is One"" documents the real life story of Ronald Abong who was one of many who was able to escape the rebel's sword. The film traces his life as a small child, who at six years old escaped the murderous rebels and fled for days with his aunt and uncle to find refuge in the IDPC Starch Factory camp in Lira, Uganda. It follows his journey of being rescued by Victoria Nalongo Namusisi, who found Ronald naked, severely malnourished and near death in the camp and how she brought him to her children's home near Kampala and slowly brought him back to life. Now twelve years later the camera captures Ronald's return to Lira to confront the ghosts of his horrific childhood. Lisa (Rosamund Pike) is a fiercely intelligent Cambridge-educated woman who feels a bit trapped, tending to the home with a husband that suggests she keep her opinions to herself. She may not live in the same world as the other women, but she shares their views. No one thought the revolution would come to Dagenham, until one day, it did. Rita, who primarily sees herself as a wife and mother, is coerced into attending a meeting with shop steward Connie, sympatheic union representative Albert (Bob Hoskins) and Peter Hopkins (Rupert Graves), Ford's Head of Industrial Relations. What she expects to be simply a day out of work, complete with a free lunch, turns into much more when she and her colleagues become outraged by the lack of respect shown in the meeting to the women employees. With humor, common sense and courage Rita and the other women take on their bosses, an increasingly belligerent local community, and finally the government, as their intelligence and unpredicatability proves to be a match for any of their male opponents. Daring to stand up and push boundaries, the women changed a system that no one wanted to admit was broken.","stream","['Ford Motor Company ltd', 'Ford Dagenham (Factory)']","['England', 'Great Britain']","['Sex discrimination', 'Wages', 'Strikes and lockouts']","['Feature films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1008269xxx/1008269122/1008269122-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3409737" "asp3409686-marc","","(Sex) appeal","","108 minutes","[]","22 years old Pai arrives in the small town of Taitung to pursue a music degree. Most Madras musicians begin their training in the nurturing environment of the home. In this series, several top musicians are seen in family settings as they teach their children and students, discuss their views of Karnatak music and its spiritual dimensions, and demonstrate elements of this unique devotional classical tradition. It presents three imagined contexts. The first is of a Muslim nawab puppet who is convinced that his Hindu puppeteers are prejudiced against him on religious grounds. The second introduces his concubine-courtesan, a semi-historical personage from the 17th century, Anarkali, who, after centuries of patience and endurance, finally feels obliged to accuse the nawab of bigotry, and urges him to look at the positive elements of the puppeteers' adaptive strategies for survival in the new world. The nawab tries to follow his consort's advice but cannot refrain from nattering sarcastically to make the puppeteers look their worst. Finally, an imaginary spokesman of an equally imaginary puppeteers' guild presents a gilded, altruistic view of the modern puppetry adaptations. The nawab is convinced - or is he? In the course of this videotape the viewer is introduced to the colorful variety and creativity of Rajasthani puppetry and its music.","stream","[]","['India']","['Marionettes', 'Puppet theater', 'Kaṭhputlī (Puppetry)']","['Ethnographic films', 'Documentary-style films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008508xxx/1008508335/1008508335-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3409543" "asp3409541-marc","","Bake restudy 1984","","61 minutes","[]","A one-hour video narrated by Nazir Jairazbhoy and Amy Catlin. It then surveys the music and dances of African-Indian men, women, and children in Karnataka, Hyderabad, Bombay, and Gujarat. Exciting footage of ritual events shows the stages of music during ecstatic trance, exorcism, and celebratory rites, when both male and female Sidi Sufi saints are invoked through euphoric rhythms, voices, and communal dances. Musical instruments such as footed drums, coconut rattles, armpit-held drums, and braced musical bows show the retention of African musical practices. Worshipped by millions of devotees in the border regions of southern Maharashtra, northern Karnataka, and adjacent areas of India, this fertility goddess is best known through media representations and social activism protesting practices linked to sexuality and prostitution. Her musical and social traditions have parallels in the devadasi (women dedicated to male deities) system in Tamilnadu before its reform and classicization in the early twentieth century. The DVD attempts to balance the typically negative representations of the tradition, which tend to focus on controversial practices and to exclude the unique musical forms essential to the worship of the goddess Renuka/Yellamma. 'Fictive documentary' techniques employed include the autobiographical voice of the Goddess, who reflects on elements of her own varied histories and some of the practices of her followers, and the voice of her son Parasuram. Virtuosic performances by women and men practitioners (jogtas and jogappas, including transgenders) are featured in ensembles including the chaundke, a one-stringed variable-tension 'plucked drum' believed to have first been fashioned by Parasuram from a demon's skull. These musical ritualists are necessary for calendrical festivals shown in the video such as pilgrimage during Rande Purnima ('Widows' Full Moon), when the goddess and her devidasis are temporarily widowed, processions in the 'Baby-Dropping Ritual', and for biweekly mendicancy rounds and oracle rituals. Police threats to confiscate musical instruments, and protest songs sung within the tradition against the dedication of children, attest to contemporary conflicts surrounding the goddess and her music, the endangerment of her chaundke, and the human rights issues at stake.","stream","[]","['India']","['Rēṇukāmbe (Hindu deity)', 'Music', 'Goddess religion', 'Musical instruments', 'Hindu goddesses']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008508xxx/1008508329/1008508329-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3409531" "asp3409529-marc","","Trashborn","","30 minutes","[]","Trashborn follows seven families of trash divers over four years on a garbage dump in the Dominican Republic, using the dump as a central meeting point of all seven stories. His research showed that the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide has grown from 315 ppm in 1958 to 380 in 2005, with the increases correlated to fossil fuel emissions. The film interviews leading scientists from around the world who present their projections that the Earth may warm 4-10 degrees by the end of the century, and what consequences this holds for our planet and various species, including humankind. Our ""sister"" planet Venus is cited as an example in which natural events created ""runaway"" global warming, making life impossible. The human face of climate change","","86 minutes","[]","Climate Refugees is the first feature film to explore in-depth the global human impact of climate change and its serious destabilizing effect on international politics. The film turns the distant concept of global warming into a concrete human problem with enormous worldwide consequences. Experts predict that by mid-century hundreds of millions of people will be uprooted as a result of sea level rise and an increase in extreme weather events, droughts, and desertification. Little is being done to plan for the potential mass migration of millions of refugees who will be forced to cross national borders. According to the UN, there are already more environmental refugees in the world than political or religious refugees. The Pentagon now considers climate change a national security risk and the phrase ""climate wars"" is being talked about in war-rooms. The filmmakers traveled the world for nearly 3 years to document the impact of climate change, witnessing inhabitants of countries forced to leave their homes by climatic events with little or no protection. The film features a variety of leading scientists, relief workers, security consultants, and major political figures, including John Kerry and Newt Gingrich. All make a strong case that, whether human-caused or a product of nature, the changing climate is already creating humanitarian disasters and will inevitably lead to worldwide political instability. Climate Refugees was filmed in Bangladesh, Tuvalu, China, Fiji, Chad, Sudan, Kenya, Maldives, Europe and the US.","stream","[]","[]","['Environmental degradation', 'Sustainable development', 'Global warming', 'Greenhouse effect, Atmospheric', 'Forced migration', 'Climatic changes', 'Global environmental change']","['Documentary films', 'Environmental films', 'Nonfiction films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1008434xxx/1008434379/1008434379-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3409465" "asp3409463-marc","","Arctic quest. Five of them then raise the money to travel to Alaska ""in search for the truth."" Accompanied by videographer Jeff Barrie, they interview residents of large towns and small indigenous villages, governmental employees, and environmentalists -- and are introduced to the complexity of the issue. Most local residents support development because it provides jobs and strengthens the local economy. We hear the voice of an environmentalist who states that if ""locals"" in every region in America had had their way, not one of America's natural treasures such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, or Yellowstone would be in existence today. The visitors also see magnificent vistas and thousands of caribou and visit the Gwich'n people who are fighting to maintain their heritage and culture. They also explore the massive destruction of the land at Prudhoe Bay, the center of the oil industry's operations. This film provides a detailed and thought-provoking introduction to the heated issue of oil drilling in Alaska and its larger environmental implications. It also gives the viewer a first hand look at the human implications of global warming and helps us identify with populations who face the threat of becoming environmental refugees. Laura Sarti's vocal teaching brings together influences from her native Italy, from the tradition of Mathilde and Blanche Marchesi as well as the bel canto teacher Lucie Manen, and from the German/Austrian tradition through Emmy Heim and her long time coach Paul Hamburger. Laura Sarti was born in 1924 in Trieste, Italy where she heard many of the great Italian singers. Her family emigrated to Egypt in 1939. After the war she came to England, where she stayed for the rest of her life. During her operatic career she sang for E.N.O., W.N.O. and Glyndebourne, and she was a founder cast member of both Kent and Scottish Opera. She made many recordings for the BBC and was a noted recitalist. She sings in the Glyndebourne CD of Barber of Seville and in Erato CD of Monteverdi's Orfeo. A professor and Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama since the 1970s, she has developed an international reputation as a teacher and regularly gave Master Classes in Britain, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Ireland and Portugal. She has many pupils of world renown. Beginning with breathing and posture, going on to focusing and balancing vowel sounds, lifting the soft palate, articulation of consonants and appoggio ('leaning on the breath'), she demonstrates the basic elements of building a technique that will enable a singer to become a true interpreter, able to reveal colours fuelled by the artistic imagination in the sound of the voice. With her pupils Clare Ghigo and Ricardo Panela she demonstrates a typical sequence of exercises and gives brief coaching on operatic repertoire.","stream","[]","[]","['Opera', 'Singing', 'Music coaching']","['Filmed lectures']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008470xxx/1008470793/1008470793-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3409453" "asp3409451-marc","","History of vocal teaching.
