Occasionally the planet bites back - with terrifying consequences that have shaped our evolution. 70,000 years ago humans spread across Africa and Southern Asia. But then a catastrophe strikes, taking us to the brink of extinction. The Toba mega-volcano erupts in Indonesia sending trillions of tonnes of ash into the atmosphere, blocking the sun. The prey we hunt become scarce. The human population drops from over a million to just a few thousand. Yet out of this extreme hardship we emerge stronger. But the planet has more tests to throw at us. 20,000 years ago large parts of the world are covered in Ice. Again we are forced to adapt, and for the first time we must create appropriate clothing. We turn a shard of bone into a needle - capable of stitching together close fitting clothes. Around 10,000 years ago the ice recedes. In the Middle East edible plants and grasses - like wheat - thrive. Humans take advantage of this excess, and establish permanent settlements. The warming world helps give birth to farming. But with farming and settlement, conflict arises between neighbouring groups. In the Mongolian Steppes a leader emerges: Genghis Khan. He leads the Mongols in a bloody rampage across the world, killing millions, forging a giant empire that connects the Far East to Europe. A long period of rain, floods and famine have rendered Europeans weak. Down the Mongol highways travels an even more terrifying killer than Genghis Khan: The Black Death. Millions die. When the plague subsides, survivors find themselves facing a new world. There are fewer people, more land, food and jobs. In this new Europe, Venice becomes rich from trade and banking. The Renaissance blossoms in an explosion of innovation, culture and commerce. The search for new trade routes inspires wealthy Europeans to explore, to travel ... and they discover the New World. Plants are such an important part of our lives that they play a central role in our evolution. Around 12,000 years ago humans discover farming. It allows people to establish settled communities. It's the beginning of civilization. But it has a price. We shrink, we go to war, and become addicted to narcotics. Our wars in the Old World eventually lead us to the New World where Europeans discover corn, the Aztec's own genetically modified crop. Hundreds of years later, when America suffers the Midwest Dustbowl, farmers blend four strains of corn into a super-strong hybrid, making a new drought-proof crop. In the New World a new crop helps to fund its colonization: tobacco. The British bring it to China in a new cocktail - they mix it with Opium. The crippling drug leads to the Opium War - a significant turning point in the shift of power from East to West. Later, in America, a new initiative to crack down on intoxicants sees the introduction of Prohibition - spearheading a new culture of hooch-brewing and organized crime. Plants have been a unifying resource before: under British rule America's best pine trees were snapped up by colonial leaders, the resulting Pine Tree riots were the first skirmishes in the American revolution - the same conflict which saw valuable barrels of British tea thrown into the sea. Modern transport and communications have resulted in a world that is wealthier, healthier, more mobile and better informed than ever before. Throughout history new trade routes have proved to be double-edged swords, opening the way to wealth as well as terrible dangers - among them revolutionary ideas and terrifying pandemics. In their quest for silver, the Romans lay down roads across Britain. They have built a giant empire, spanning three continents, building roads to facilitate troop movements, tax collection and, crucially, trade. This vast road network means travel in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa is safe for the first time. The Christian messenger Paul uses Rome's roads to carry the message of a sworn enemy of the Roman state. He's spreading the word of a religious rebel, Jesus Christ. The Christians take advantage of Rome's infrastructure to spread their message. But another Roman trade route allows a far more sinister threat to travel back: disease. Around 300AD Roman explorers reach the capital of China. Rome's desire for silk has linked East and West for the first time. For over a thousand years after the Romans visited China, the world is struck by wave-upon-wave of pandemics. Smallpox, plague, measles all spread, killing millions. In the Age of Discovery, Europeans travel to the New World carrying guns and something even more powerful: a deadly cocktail of diseases, to which they themselves are immune. Spanish soldiers under the command of Hernan Cortes enter the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan. They unwittingly transmit smallpox and flu to their hosts. 95% of them die. The great Aztec and Inca empires collapse, and Europeans take control of the Americas and their wealth. European settlers in the New World establish giant plantations farming sugar, cotton and tobacco. But the Europeans diseases have decimated the Native American population. There are not enough people to work the land. The settlers' solution is to import slave labour. But the North and South clash over the freeing of slaves. Slavery ends up tearing North America apart. It leads to The American Civil War. However, global trading networks allow millions of immigrants from across the world to pour into America. This hungry new workforce turns America into a superpower. The age of mass migration has begun. A sharp flint becomes a Spear. It allows us to overcome our physical limitations. 12,000 years ago an Ice Age gripped the world. Our ancient ancestors come up with a miniature variation on the spear - an invention we still use today: the needle. Enabling us to make appropriate clothing, the needle allows humans to be more versatile, more adaptable, better able to survive. This eternal quest for new ways of doing things results in an invention that completely transforms how we live: the wheel. The wheel allows us to do many things, but principally it lets us move more rapidly over land. It dramatically alters trade and travel. Eventually railroad networks stretch across continents, uniting far flung communities. Henry Ford exploits the wheel to produce his breakthrough Model T motorcar. The automobile allows humans more mobility than ever before. Thanks to the mass production of the crossbow, in 300 BC Emperor Qin is able to unify the warring states of China into a giant empire. 500 years later another mass-produced weapon is instrumental in liberating China from Mongol rule: the gun. The Chinese invention of paper and block printing allow ideas to spread. But only the wealthy can afford to own books. In Germany, Johannes Gutenberg invents the printing press which revolutionizes the distribution of knowledge and religion. In the 1700s, an English inventor comes up with an extraordinary idea: the cotton mill. It's the forerunner of today's factory. The binary codes used in the machine eventually lead to Morse Code and modern computing. The roots of our current, instant communications can be found in 19th century technologies. Arms race. Season 1, Episode 2","","22 minutes","['Mankind decoded']","Episode Two: The Arms Race About 10,000 years ago we discover farming. We now the means of providing ourselves with a stable supply of food. But when crops fail, early farming communities face a new threat. War. It's the birth of the arms race. In these early battles over resources, hunting weapons like bows and arrows are strengthened and repurposed for warfare. They allow people to kill from a safer distance than hand-to-hand combat. At Megiddo, in 1500BC, the world's greatest civilization prepares to do battle with a powerful coalition of Middle Eastern warlords. It's the world's first recorded war. To win the battle, the Egyptians conscript tens of thousands of citizens, and employ professional soldiers. They also pioneer hi-tech new weaponry, the chariot, and the composite bow. This allows them to shoot at even greater distances, and at speed. In 300 BC, a handful of states battle for supremacy in China. One emperor unites them all through force. Emperor Qin's craftsmen and engineers develop cast iron and mass production. Able to manufacture identical metal mechanisms in quantity, they take the traditional bow and turn it into the crossbow, which they then produce by the thousands. They also invent gunpowder. The first guns are primitive but effective, allowing the Chinese to throw the powerful Mongols out of China. Gunpowder makes its way down the Silk Road, and the Turkish Sultan Mehmed uses it to conquer the ancient city state of Constantinople. No army has successfully breached its massive city walls for over a thousand years. Mehmed's heavy cannons unleash a barrage of destruction. Gunpowder shows that city walls are now useless. It completely changes the way we defend ourselves. We develop military airplanes, which deliver death and destruction from even greater distances. Mankind is about to have a huge wake-up-call. Military aircraft lead to the delivery of the most destructive weapon in history. The atomic bomb. The Americans use it against Japan to end the biggest war of all time: WW2. The arms race has reached its apex.","stream","[]","[]","['Civilization', 'Human ecology', 'Human evolution', 'Technology and civilization', 'Nature and civilization']","['Nonfiction television programs', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008515xxx/1008515497/1008515497-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3550525" "asp3550523-marc","","Beautifully scary. Academically struggling children are routinely saddled with this wastebasket diagnosis and then treated (e.g., medicated) for the wrong condition. Children have attention difficulties for all sorts of reasons, some of which are, in fact, AD(H)D but most are not. The ClinicalQ rapid brain assessment precisely identifies the neurological conditions of AD(H)D, as well as other causes of the child’s academic difficulties. Fun Facts: Listen to what your brain is telling you. We often try to self-soothe to calm symptoms. For example, children with ADHD will move around constantly to keep their theta waves down.","stream","[]","[]","['Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder', 'Diagnostic errors', 'Attention in children']","['Filmed lectures']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008651xxx/1008651913/1008651913-disc001-file001-frame00005-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3484965" "asp3484963-marc","","Super Brain Summit. Once identified, neurotherapy (including neurofeedback and braindriving) is the treatment of choice for dysregulated brain activity. Therapies appropriate for treating the experiential factors also are discussed. Fun Facts: Challenging the brain with new skills and ideas increases the low frequency waves in the brain.
