A cosmic construction foreman supervises each stage in the building of the earth, the solar system and the galaxy, but like any construction project there will be mistakes - a moon in the wrong place or a little too much iron in the mix. But how many people have any idea what they’re taking? And is the gamble worth it? The emergence of new drugs and untested legal highs has resulted in a rising death toll, raising questions about current legislation. In this timely documentary, DJ B. Traits investigates drug culture, and asks whether it’s time for a rethink on this complex issue. Talking to paramedics, police, drug users, and the experts exploring new approaches to testing, she asks whether the law and education are doing enough to protect young people. The grisly Great Fire of London","","30 minutes","['Horrible histories']","For the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London, this special looks at the disaster and the events that surrounded it. On the night of September 2nd 1666, a spark from a baker's oven in Pudding Lane ignited a fire which roared through the tightly packed streets of London, tearing up the timber framed houses and destroying up to a third of the city. In true Horrible Histories fashion, this episode explores London and Britain before the fire, full of plague and party in the raucous Restoration atmosphere personified by King Charles II. Learn how London's Mayor preferred to stay in bed during the fire because he'd been partying the night before, and how Samuel Pepys rushed to bury his parmesan cheese for safety. Meet Christopher Wren, astronomer and self-styled architect and see how his new St Paul's Cathedral, which rose from the ashes, was a physical manifestation of the ideas of the age.","stream","[]","['England', 'London (England)']","['Great Fire, London, England, 1666', 'Fires']","[""Children's television programs"", 'Television comedies']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009922xxx/1009922458/1009922458-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4035192" "asp4035190-marc","","Horrible histories. Episode three","","50 minutes","['Fossil wonderlands']","In this revelatory series, Professor Richard Fortey, Britain's foremost chronicler of ancient worlds, tells the extraordinary history of palaeontology through three of the world's greatest fossil sites. These fossil 'time capsules' contain entire eco-systems of now-vanished worlds. Only a handful of them exist in the world, but each one of them has overturned generations of paleontological thinking and reconfigured our understanding of the past. These 'super-sites' are uniquely special not just because of the scale of the life preserved but because each location reveals a history of evolution of one type of creature and highlights three key evolutionary moments: early life in the seas, feathered dinosaurs and the rise of birds and the birth of mammals. Together they tell a story not just of the ancient past, but how that past was discovered. In this final episode, Professor Richard Fortey investigates the remains of an ancient volcanic lake in Germany where stunningly well-preserved fossils of early mammals, giant insects and even perhaps our oldest known ancestor have been found. A re-drafting of the government's literary strategy in 2007 is expected to order primary schools to use the system of synthetic phonics to teach children to read. Under the system, sounds associated with letters or groups of letters are learned, before being combined into words. But many teachers have condemned the move, saying this method makes the process boring and onerous, and replaces the use of real books with dull ones written specifically for reading schemes. By making some minor adjustments to the school day, Langley Junior School in Plymouth have freed up one afternoon a week which is allocated for enrichment time for pupils and PPA time for staff. On Wednesday afternoons qualified professionals come into school to run a whole range of activities for the pupils. In London, Grinling Gibbons Primary School has adjusted its school day dramatically so that staff can miss the morning and evening rush hours. They save travel time and because they finish earlier have time to spare at the end of the day too. At Wintringham High School in Grimsby they have introduced an on-site health clinic which staff can take advantage of during the school day. It offers weight checks, dietary advice, cholesterol testing and counselling.","stream","[]","[]","['Time management', 'Work-life balance', 'Teachers', 'Career development']","['Instructional television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004319xxx/1004319445/1004319445-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EDIV;1730751" "asp1730750-ediv","","This time it's personal","2005","17 min","['Ease the load']","The magazine series helping teachers to manage their workload and improve their work-life balance.
