This unit shows how conflict and strategies can be thought about mathematically, and in doing so, reveal important insights about human and even animal behaviors. Mathematics Illuminated is a 13-part multimedia learning resource for adult learners and high school teachers in math and other disciplines. The series explores major themes in the field of mathematics, from mankind's earliest study of prime numbers to the cutting edge mathematics used to reveal the shape of the universe. Rather than a series of problems to be solved, mathematics is presented as play we engage in to answer deep questions that are relevant in our world today. Mathematics also provides us with a powerful language for uncovering and describing phenomena in the world around us. In addition to these concerns, the film also asks how the global economy is affecting our communities. Can a traditional small town main street with mom and pop stores be viable in the 21st century, when big box stores on the outskirts of town compete with local business? How can the community mediate the different interest groups? Can idealistic goals drive real political change? As a shaman, Paja Thao ministers to the physical and spiritual needs of friends and family with elaborate rituals that bridge the natural and spirit worlds. His young daughter’s narration gives us insight into the transition from an Asian village to Middle America. To his dismay, Paja’s children are losing touch with their family’s ancient traditions as they turn to TV, computer games and Christianity. Only his youngest daughter, age fourteen, who studies Hmong traditional dance, seems interested in her culture. Paja’s sixteen-year-old son, Xue, works at the local pizza parlor and spends most of this time with his American girlfriend. Paja’s concern about family unity deepen when Xue reveals his girlfriend is pregnant. Paja’s older children have started families of their own, turning to Christianity and severing ties to their ancient Hmong traditions.Seeing his family splinter causes Paja great sadness. He conducts a ceremony and while in trance, discover that his own soul has strayed from his body. He spirals into depression and is unable to heal himself or to perform rituals for others for a year. There is also a look at elements of the APP writing criteria and examples of how a teacher uses it to focus teaching in the classroom. There is then the chance to try applying the criteria to a student's work. Secondary APP reading criteria is also looked at, and a teacher shows how they share the criteria with students to help them consider how they need to improve. Use the videos or DVD and the Facilitator's Guide in teacher workshops, school improvement teams, and study groups to explore the changes that occur in the brains of healthy teens and how these changes affect their thinking, learning, and behavior. Explain why changes in the adolescent brain reveal the reasons why teens behave the way they do -their difficulties with planning, time management, and deadlines. Show examples of teaching strategies that match with teenagers' developing minds and help support their maturing thinking skills. And focus on how educators can influence teens to avoid negative behaviors - including health- and risk-related issues - that often derail learning. Plus, a short program for students and parents offers you a way to reach out to other audiences in your school who want to explore the challenges of the adolescent years. Program 1: Almost Adults provides a clear and simple explanation of how brain structures and functions change in the adolescent years.Program 2: The Engaged Teen takes audiences to actual secondary school classrooms to showcase teaching practices that are especially effective at helping teens learn and retain new content. Program 3: The Reflective Teen highlights the importance of teaching teenagers thinking skills that help them monitor and direct their own behavior.Program 4: Know Your Brain ... This video explains how the Always Encrypted feature works and shows how to implement column encryption using best practices. System and database administrators who might otherwise have access to view any data in the database are not able to view data protected through Always Encrypted's feature set. This video begins with an introduction to column encryption as implemented through the Always Encrypted feature, and the use cases for applying that encryption. Then follows an explanation of how exactly the technology works and is implemented in SQL Server. The video then walks you through implementing Always Encrypted column encryption on a new database and again on an existing database. Finally, the video covers how to configure an application to access the encrypted data in a manner that is transparent and convenient for end users of your database applications. What You Will Learn: Recognize use cases for the Always Encrypted feature; Understand how the feature works technically; Generate an encrypted column for a new table; Insert data into an encrypted database column; Encrypt existing data within a table; Identify the relevant encryption certificates; Modify an application to access encrypted data. Use this video series -on VHS or DVD- in team meetings or workshops to take colleagues to rural and urban high schools that have redesigned the cultures of their schools and implemented strategies to personalize learning and help their students reach higher levels of achievement.Program 1 takes you inside classrooms to explore how teachers structure learning experiences to meet a wider range of student needs and help students take an active role in their learning. See examples of high school teachers who have expanded their instructional approaches to include strategies such as project-based learning, journaling and reflective writing, and exhibitions and portfolios. In Program 2 teachers and administrators reveal how they personalize the culture of their high schools. See how high schools use advisory groups, teacher teaming in small learning communities, and integrated support systems to be more attentive to students. And explore ways to help students develop a sense of community and take ownership over the direction of their learning. Program 3 examines how high schools can engage students in community-based learning and bring community members into their schools to help students connect learning to real-life experiences. Explore several types of community-connected learning experiences for adolescents, such as internships, service-learning projects, and connections with institutions of higher education. Amy, Monique, Joann and Ann Marie -- they all have given birth behind bars. For these women who are on intimate terms with sexual abuse, poverty and addiction, the Taconic Correctional Facility in New York State offers a rare gleam of hope. One of only five prisons in the U.S. to provide a nursery program for inmates, Taconic allows the women to keep their babies for the first eighteen months of their lives while insisting that the mothers participate in a rigorous series of classes that range from basic child care to anger management, and drug counseling. Each woman is released from prison in the course of filming. Each must make life altering choices: whether to find a job and break the cycle of relapse and re-arrest that has led to the loss of her other children, or pick up the crack-pipe, abandon the child and return to the streets. Prison Lullabies addresses these issues by allowing the inmates to relate their own stories.","stream","['Taconic Correctional Facility']","['United States', 'New York (State)']","['Women prisoners', 'Children of women prisoners']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1003831xxx/1003831395/1003831395-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?LAWV;1650474" "asp3359888-marc","","Hollywood's best film directors. I beat my woman! I'm very macho! If you want to tame a woman, beat her!"" Lyrics from a Nicaraguan popular song. Violence against women affects the lives of millions of women worldwide, in all socio-economic classes. It is the leading cause of death and injury among women from fifteen to forty-five years of age, occurring in greater numbers than traffic accidents, cancer or war, according to U.N. statistics. Nicaragua has not escaped this pandemic. The pervasive culture of machismo and the general public's indifference to the problem in its male-dominated society led to the murders of more than fifty women at the hands of their husbands or partners last year. Half of these women had filed police reports on their assaulters before they were murdered. In this documentary, several women describe their husbands and partners attacks and their frustrating attempts to obtain justice from the Nicaraguan police, district attorneys and judges. The victims are routinely ignored by the police and bureaucrats responsible for arresting their attackers. The media makes fun of the women's suffering, using songs to encourage male chauvinism. The psychologist Ruth Marina Matamoros says the situation is so bad that violence against women has been declared a public health problem. To alleviate this a few all-women police precincts have been set up, staffed by specially-trained policewomen. The policewomen deplore that no shelters exist for the battered women. In the film, some of the women attend a meeting to learn how to break the cycle of violence. The film ends with women marching in protest, shouting ""Not One More Woman Killed --!YA NO MAS!""","stream","[]","['Nicaragua']","['Family violence', 'Abused women']","['Documentary']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1003832xxx/1003832227/1003832227-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?FLON;1650556" "asp1743086-ediv","","Can background music help learning?","2008","16 min","['Innovation', 'Education in video']","Playing music quietly in the background in lessons can stimulate better concentration and learning according to some scientists. She keeps a beady eye on the pupils behaviour and she witnesses some remarkable changes once the music is playing. Maureen Moore, an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist, talks about counselling and explores some of the issues relating to what counselling is and how we go about choosing a counsellor. She explains the need to think about what you want from the counselling relationship. The relationship will be influenced by the person of the counsellor as well as the therapeutic approach that they adopt. There are three sections: Why did you consider counselling? In this first section, we hear from the individuals that they all had different life experiences which led them to seek counselling. Experiences like loss, abuse, and separation, ending of relationships, bottling up emotions, fear, self doubt and confusion about own feelings are some of the reasons presented. Each person and situation is unique and therefore we see that their needs are equally different. How did you find a counsellor? Finding a counsellor can be challenging and the six individuals talk about the different ways in which they identified people they would talk to and how they eventually decided who they would continue to see. How is counselling helping? This question is answered by the six individuals. They mention enrichment, support, help with clarifying the confusing 'why' questions in life, resolving relationship problems, finding answers to questions, increasing confidence, not being overwhelmed by feelings and by others and working on the future.","stream","[]","[]","['Counselors', 'Counseling', 'Psychotherapy', 'Counselor and client']","['Filmed lectures']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004913xxx/1004913208/1004913208-disc001-file001-frame00290-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?CTIV;2287150" "asp3370413-marc","","Aseptic nursing technique in the OR. From death-defying aerial repairmen in the United States using ultraviolet cameras to seek out an invisible force that lurks unseen on power lines, to German scientists unlocking the secrets of animal locomotion with the world's most powerful moving x-ray camera, to infrared cameras that can finally reveal the secrets within a humble beehive, he shows how new technologies are letting us see our world anew.","stream","[]","[]","['Light', 'Natural history']","['Documentary films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005947xxx/1005947854/1005947854-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?VAST;2543174" "asp1743060-ediv","","Evolution","2008","33 min","['Resource review special']","With 2009 being both the bicentenary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On The Origin of Species, there's a renewed focus on teaching evolution in schools. Frances Perkins rose higher in the United States government than any woman ever had, serving as the first woman member of the United States Cabinet for twelve years, working closely with FDR. Her career in government spanned three decades and traced the rise of social conscience in the US, from the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire to the revolutionary legislation of the New Deal, including the introduction of pensions, unemployment insurance, minimum wage, and an end to child labor. Much of the narrative is told in his own words, drawn from his autobiography, Ma Vie (My Life) and there is unique film footage of Chagall being interviewed as he paints. An intimate picture of the mischievous painter and his peripatetic life emerges through interviews of the many personalities in the art world which Chagall inhabited : Apollinaire, Bonnard, Matisse, Picasso, Mayakovski and Malraux. Extensive use of rare historical film adds richness to this astounding biography of the man who was born in the shtetl of Vitebsk in tsarist Russia. When World War I broke out, he was forced to join the Russian Army and then asked to open an art school in Vitebsk by the Bolsheviks when they took power. He left for Paris in 1923 where he and his wife Bella lived in poverty. Finally, his illustrations for a special edition of Gogol s Dead Souls attracted wide admiration. As he put it, ""I created my own reality -- neither Cubist nor Impressionist."" Fleeing Paris in 1939 he spent the war years in New York, collaborating on art, theatre and ballet projects with other artists in exile, Duchamps, Calder, Tanguy, Stravinsky and Massine. Post-war, he created monumental works often inspired by the Bible: the magnificent ceiling of the Paris Opera, the murals for the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the stained glass windows for cathedrals in Metz and Reims and the Hadassah clinic in Jerusalem. In 1984 three large exhibitions in France celebrated the artist's 97th birthday, one at the National Museum Message Biblique Marc Chagall in Nice. His attempts to connect the Jewish traditions of his childhood to the artistic modernity of his time yielded a profoundly original oeuvre somewhat removed from the prevailing currents of art in the 20th century.
