Vast hordes of summer visitors cram a lifetime of drama into one long, magical day; they must feed, fight and rear their young in this brief window of plenty. Summer is a tough time for the polar bear family as their ice world melts away and the cubs take their first swimming lesson. Some bears save energy by dozing on icy sun beds while others go egg-collecting in an arctic tern colony, braving bombardment by sharp beaks. There are even bigger battles on the tundra; a herd of musk oxen gallop to the rescue as a calf is caught in a life and death struggle with a pair of Arctic wolves. But summer also brings surprises as a huge colony of 400,000 king penguins cope with an unlikely problem – heat. The adults go surfing while the woolly-coated chicks take a cooling mud bath. Nearby a bull fur seal is prepared to fight to the death with a rival. Fur flies as the little pups struggle desperately to keep out of the way of the duelling giants. Further south, a minke whale is hunted amongst the ice floes by a family of killer whales. The dramatic chase lasts over 2 hours and has never been filmed before. The killers harry the minke whale, taking it in turns to wear it down. Eventually it succumbs to the relentless battering ... Finally, comical adelie penguins waddle back to their half a million strong colony like clockwork toys. The fluffy chicks need constant feeding and protection as piratical skuas patrol the skies. When an unguarded chick is snatched, a dramatic aerobatic ‘dogfight’ ensues.","stream","[]","['Antarctica', 'Arctic regions', 'Polar regions']","['Animals', 'Ecology', 'Summer', 'Natural history']","['Science television programs', 'Nature television programs', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1009681xxx/1009681636/1009681636-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3934837" "asp2373110-busv","","The future of America's rail road industry","2013","3 min","['Business education in video']","John Fenton, Patriot Rail President & CEO, discusses the future of the American railroad industry on Bloomberg Television's Taking Stock.","stream","[]","['United States']","['Railroads']","['Television news programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005856xxx/1005856895/1005856895-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?BUSV;2373110" "asp3177845-spx2","","Medical fitness. We find out how these artists – who once upon a time knew nothing about selling their works - are coping with earnest collectors begging for new paintings, ever-demanding galleries, and even officials who now see them as China's “new ambassadors” to the world.","stream","[]","[]","['Art, Chinese']","['Documentary film']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005334xxx/1005334890/1005334890-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?ARTV;2173244" "asp3167272-marc","","Sunday morning. Struggling for American Indian religious freedom","","91 minutes","[]","Professor Huston Smith is widely regarded as the most eloquent and accessible contemporary authority on the history of religions. In this thought-provoking documentary he is featured in dialogues with eight American Indian leaders. The film interweaves thoughtful commentary, sequences shot in threatened Indian sacred sites, and scenes from the Third Parliament of the World's Religions in Cape Town, South Africa. The result is a profound and poignant exploration of the myriad problems faced by contemporary Native Americans in practicing their religious ceremonies and beliefs. Each of the film's eight segments deals with an important obstacle to American Indian religious freedom. Taken as a whole, the film provides an outstanding overview of the spiritual ways of today's Native Americans. The Native leaders and the topics they examine with Prof. Smith are as follows: Walter Echo-Hawk (Pawnee), Senior Staff Attorney, Native American Rights Fund: A History and overview of the American Indian struggle for religious freedom; Winona LaDuke (Anishinabe), Director, White Earth Land Recovery Project: Native religions and the earth; pollution and clear-cutting as religious persecution; Frank Dayish, Jr. (Dine), President, Native American Church of North America: The triumph of the Native American Church's struggle for the religious use of Peyote; Charlotte Black Elk (Lakota), Primary Advocate for protection of the Black Hills: Protection of The Black Hills and Native access to sacred sites; Doug George-Kanentiio (Mohawk), journalist and activist: Destruction of Native languages and the resulting damage to Native ceremonies; Lenny Foster (Dine), Director/Spiritual Advisor, Navajo Nation Corrections Project: Injustices faced by incarcerated Native Americans; Tonya Gonnella Frichner (Onondaga), President, American Indian Law Alliance: The spiritual threat posed to indigenous peoples by the Human Genome Diversity Project; Guy Lopez (Crow Creek Sioux), Coordinator, Sacred Lands Protection Program, Association of American Indian Affairs: Disrespect of Apache beliefs by University of Arizona and Jesuit astrophysicists. The film includes excerpts of messages by the Dalai Lama, South African President Nelson Mandela, and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. The ceremonial opening of the week-long Parliament flamboyantly displays the rich variety of religious traditions from around the world and includes a performance of an Iroquois ancestral song by noted American Indian singer Joanne Shenandoah (Oneida), who also delivers the articulate narration for the documentary. The menus on the DVD version of the film enable easy access to particular segments and encourage in-depth classroom discussion and analysis. ""A Seat at the Table"" is an exemplary teaching tool that will spotlight the issues of Native American religious freedom for a wide variety of courses in Native American studies, religious studies and comparative religion, cultural anthropology, American history and studies, and legal studies. The film is also the ideal enhancement to the new book by the same title published by University of California Press. ""A Seat at the Table"" was produced by Gary Rhine for Kifaru Productions. The Wonder of Animals celebrates the most successful animal groups on Earth - from apes to elephants, ants to bears. Discover why, despite appearing clumsy and comical, penguins actually have an anatomy that is perfect for their environment and how the dominance of big cats is down to more than just their brawn. New science is combined with the very latest animal behaviour research and extensive BBC natural history HD archive footage to build a complete picture of each animal, revealing how its unique characteristics have contributed to its success. The 100 trillion ants in the world weigh as much as all the people on earth and have colonized the planet like no other animal. Chris Packham explores the ingenious ways in which ants have collaborated to achieve their global success - natural air-conditioning systems keep ants cool in their nests, shelters made from their own bodies protect nomadic ants from the elements and a sense of smell five times more powerful than other insects allows them to overpower animals hundreds of times larger than themselves. Remarkably, new research reveals how ant colonies are capable of immunizing themselves against diseases.","stream","[]","[]","['Animals', 'Ants', 'Animal behavior']","['Wildlife television programs', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009922xxx/1009922791/1009922791-disc001-file001-frame00445-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4035858" "asp2374449-busv","","Emerging markets are under pressure","2013","8 min","['Business education in video']","Bulltick Capital Markets' Kathryn Rooney Vera, Charles Schwab's Liz Ann Sonders and Thegeostrat.com's Robert Hardy discusses emerging markets turmoil with Trish Regan on Bloomberg Television's 'Street Smart.'","stream","[]","[]","['International business enterprises', 'Economic indicators']","['Television news programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005855xxx/1005855682/1005855682-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?BUSV;2374449" "asp3236133-marc","","Videofashion news. In this film, the islanders recount the grim story of the ""occupation,"" their suffering from high cancer rates due to the fall -out of heavy metal particles, and the poisoning of the fish. While the US was paid $98 million a year by foreign governments to use Vieques for weapons testing and military training, none of the money was passed on to the residents of the island. Gradually a protest movement grew among the peace-loving islanders. In 1999, after two misfired bombs accidentally killed a civilian security guard, the movement became more passionate and better organized. Finally, in 2003, the Navy ceased all testing and training on the island. This was the first step in a complicated process of demilitarization, decontamination, and development of the community. Gothic goes global. Blood for sale. Episode 3","","48 minutes","['The art of gothic']","This absorbing series ventures deep into the heart of 19th century Britain to explore how the gothic style rose from ridicule to define the era. It is a period synonymous with progress. But at the same time, a group of men and women seemingly spurned the modern age, turning to the medieval past as a source of inspiration. From Horace Walpole to John Ruskin to Bram Stoker, this is the story of how an old, derided style of architecture became a defining characteristic of the Victorian age and was as important as the Romantic and Modernist movements that it bridged. Discover how the gothic style went from vulgar to the height of fashion; how it first symbolised tradition before becoming the hallmark of industrial progress; and how it gave voice to the savage horrors of the time.","stream","[]","['Great Britain']","['Gothic revival (Literature)', 'Gothic revival (Architecture)', 'Gothic revival (Art)']","['Television mini-series', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008343xxx/1008343379/1008343379-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3366466" "asp3907949-marc","","Windows 10 for dummies working online & with media course. The programme tells how there's fear on all sides, with many Russians equating gay behaviour with semi-demonic practices. They believe homosexuality is a lifestyle choice and see it as a direct attack on family values, even as a poison that is corrupting society and weakening Russia. On the other side, many gay Russians live in fear of direct intimidation, persecution and violence - and even murder. This film gives ordinary Russians a voice as it exposes a world of widespread repression and extreme violence: a world of cold fear.","stream","[]","['Russia (Federation)']","['Homosexuality', 'Gay men', 'Gay culture']","['Documentary films', 'Educational films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008343xxx/1008343452/1008343452-disc001-file001-frame00105-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3366610" "asp3166856-marc","","Sunday morning. Turning to Dust raises crucial issues such as how to determine which books to save and how to prevent continued use of acidic paper when alternatives exist.
