Impoverished peasants sold their blood to clinics that used unsanitary gathering methods. Nevertheless, the government does not offer any help or compensation, and has supressed protests from the villagers with force. China's health care system has fared poorly in the transition from socialism to capitalism. This is especially evident in the villages. Filmmaker Lana Jokel, born in Shanghai and educated abroad, has a special interest in art as reflected in her documentaries on such artists as Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg and Larry Rivers. She now turns her camera on the visionary Chinese artists of today whose new freedom to express themselves is evident in the work they show us. The strong communal values and strikingly beautiful, functionalistic aesthetics of this radical religious movement of the 18th and 19th centuries made a strong impression on him. At the start of the 21st century, Saarinen came across The Boston Camerata album Simple Gifts and in 2002, he contacted Joel Cohen, then Artistic Director of The Boston Camerata, about the possibility of a joint production. It took eighteen months of hard work for Saarinen and his collaborators to finalise the choreography and the visual form of Borrowed Light. The work is named after the architectural practice, common for the Shakers, of building windows into interior rooms, thus maximising daylight and productivity. Despite the strong influences of the Shakers, Borrowed Light addresses the themes of communitarian society on a general level: ""My main source of inspiration was the Shakers and I ended up using only original Shaker music, but this work is not about Shakerism. It is about community and devotion. Jury trials simply do not exist and convictions are based on confessions. Some believe that Japanese criminal court cases are simply ceremonies to impose punishment rather than determine guilt. The filmmaker obtained rare access to Japan's jails, where a cruel, secret system allows the abuse, torture and death of inmates. Prisons have spartan conditions and extremely strict rules; prisoners can be kept in solitary confinement for decades, others live eight to a room. In the last ten years there have been close to 250 suspicious deaths in custody. The film recounts the tragic ordeal of Sakae Menda who spent thirty-four years on death row after he confessed to a crime he did not commit, a confession obtained following six days of sleep deprivation and beatings. Renee Fleming lends her lustrous soprano to music by Strauss, Dvorak and Smetana. A festive new piece by Jonathan Dove opens the evening; a contemporary hornpipe forms an upbeat to anniversary composer Arne's Rule, Britannia! and traces of the season's Wood, Parry, Wagner, Rodgers and Hammerstein and opera themes run throughout the concert.","stream","[]","[]","['Songs (High voice) with orchestra']","['Arrangements (Music)', 'Art music', 'Concert television programs', 'Songs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/content/1011005xxx/1011005852/1011005852-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;5119631" "asp4035022-marc","","D Plus. About this Series: The new Against All Odds is intended as a one-year introduction to statistics. Made up of vivid real-world examples, our goal is to present statistics in the context of its contemporary use. Host Dr. Pardis Sabeti guides viewers through the wide range of statistical applications used by scientists, business owners, and even Shakespeare scholars, in their work and daily lives. Starting with descriptive statistics, the series continues through probability and inference. Each unit builds on preceding ones to expand students' statistical knowledge and solidify their understanding of how the concepts fit together. Statistical case studies range from finding patterns in lightning strikes, to linking DDT to the decline of peregrine falcons, to analyzing salaries to lobby for comparable pay for men and women. Shot in France during Wilder’s migration from Germany to the U.S., Mauvaise Graine centers around Henry Pasquier (Pierre Mingand), the spoiled son of a wealthy doctor, who discovers high-octane thrills, jazz-era romance, and a sense of purpose in life when he unwittingly falls into the company of an organized ring of car thieves. After befriending Jean (Raymond Galle), a dapper young chap with a curious fetish for men’s neckties, Henry falls in love with Jean’s sister Jeannette (legendary screen diva Danielle Darrieux), who works as car-bait for the gang, luring love-hungry Parisian gentlemen away from their chrome-plated carriages. As we follow him over the year, you are able to gain a real insight into his leaps in development and how best to support this. Each chapter explores how all of Seb’s playful activity involves many aspects of the characteristics of effective learning. This compelling video presents portraits of four Ohio college students of different racial backgrounds who are active in a variety of issues including the fight for equal education, affirmative action, affordable housing, civil liberties, and women's rights; an end to racial profiling and police brutality; and a solution to the Israeli-Palestine conflict. While all four share a passion for justice and equality, their perspectives, strategies and tactics differ -- offering the audience a look at the complexity of youth activism in the new millennium. In April 2001, the racial climate in Cincinnati made the national news during three days of civil unrest following the shooting death of an unarmed 19 year-old black man by a white police officer. But it doesn't have to be that way. Peter Fisher will teach you Python features that are applicable to writing clean code. First, we will talk about the pros and cons that confront the programmer when trying to write clean Python code. Then, we will explore the structure of a Python program and highlight features that will help us clean up and simplify our code. We will explore some good editors with built-in code analysis and linters to help guide you. We will also talk about some very helpful modules that will keep your code clean and prevent you from reinventing the wheel. Then, we will discuss some general code cleaning guidelines that aren't exclusively applicable to Python, including naming conventions and programming styles. Instead, you want teachers to continuously check their students for understanding, adjust classroom instruction if necessary, and reteach those who are falling behind. But traditionally, teachers haven't assessed students on a daily basis and aren't always prepared to use assessment data to adjust their instruction. Now here's a video series that introduces teachers to a wide variety of daily classroom assessment techniques, from pencil-and-paper tests to simple observations. Show how teachers in every grade and subject can use classroom assessments to guide their daily instruction. And convey how classroom assessments can reflect the learning goals of state- and districtwide assessments.Program 1, Techniques for Classroom Assessment, introduces teachers to proven assessment techniques and explains the importance of using daily assessments to guide instruction. Show how teachers use exit cards at the end of a class, graphic organizers, peer review, one-on-one conferencing, self-reflection, student-designed rubrics, and other assessment techniques to address the needs of different learners and help craft the next day's instruction.Program 2, The Assessment-Instruction Link, takes teachers into classrooms to see how they can modify instruction based on what they learn from classroom assessments. Actual teachers explain why it's important to assess students frequently, how they decide which assessment techniques to use, and how they cope with time-management challenges. In the third videotape, The Role of Classroom Assessment in School Improvement, interviews with teachers and administrators explain how classroom assessment directly correlates to the entire assessment process—from students' report cards to high-stakes tests. Over the course of a single weekend the school community worked with the All Change team to transform the space and deliver an effective and stimulating new environment.","stream","[]","[]","['School environment', 'Classroom environment']","['Instructional television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1004319xxx/1004319097/1004319097-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EDIV;1736612" "asp2305473-vast","","Asteroids. In her mother's generation, wrinkles, veins and sagging breasts were accepted as a symbol of a lifetime of childbirth and child rearing. New science is combined with the very latest animal behaviour research and extensive BBC natural history HD archive footage to build a complete picture of each animal, revealing how its unique characteristics have contributed to its success. Chris Packham delves beneath the skin of the big cats to explore what makes them such good hunters, and he reveals that it is not all about brawn. New scientific research shows how subtle adaptations in their anatomy and physiology contribute to the success of all stages of a big cat hunt: the stalk, the capture and the kill. Leg hairs help the leopard to stalk, and intricate muscle fibres drive the snow leopard to capture its prey. For the jaguar, jaw muscles and whiskers combine to give it a precision bite that can take down a caiman, and an enlarged area of the lioness's brain gives it the edge over all their big cat cousins.","stream","[]","[]","['Panthera', 'Animals', 'Animal behavior']","['Wildlife television programs', 'Documentary television programs']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1009922xxx/1009922790/1009922790-disc001-file001-frame00240-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;4035856" "asp2315630-dav2","","The Royal Cambodian Ballet. Then we meet winemakers at the Kanonkop Wine Estate, located on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. Next we meet a former rugby star, Jannie Engelbrecht, who acquired the Rust en Vrede Wine Estate, which became the first private winery in the country to specialize in the exclusive production of red wines. At the Van Loveren Estate, which has been in the Retief family since 1937, matriarch Oma Retief guides us through her beautiful garden; also we visit De Wetshof Estate, one of South Africa's premier chardonnay houses, tour the KWV Cathedral Cellar, and end our visit in the Paarl region at the Backsberg Estate.","stream","[]","['South Africa']","['Wine and wine making', 'Wineries']","['Travelogues (Television programs)']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1005274xxx/1005274214/1005274214-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?EBAP;2177439" "asp2731936-fash","","Videofashion news. Porn under siege","1993","58 min","[]","Video cassette recorders, computers, and evolving new technologies have catapulted pornography into a $10 billion industry. Despite sustained attacks from radical feminists and traditional groups concerned about the moral environment, porn profits soar. Winner of a coveted award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Patently Offensive: Porn Under Siege examines pornography in its social and historical context. As a dominant force in popular entertainment, porn has redefined the image culture. Its iconography has been coopted by music videos, Hollywood films, tv sitcoms, and especially advertising: the most powerful socializing agents in contemporary life. Is the tension between freedom of expression and the preservation of values which define a civilized society irreconcilable? Whose interests shall prevail in the explosive, politically divisive dialectic which now rages about pornography's contribution to criminal behavior, its First Amend-ment status, its use and depiction of women and even children? The debate about pornography engages many of the major issues of this era: individual rights, censorship, feminist theory, artistic freedom, family values. Praised for its balanced presentation, Patently Offensive; Porn Under Siege contains exclusive footage of the controversial Meese Commission hearings on pornography as well as riveting interviews with principals on all sides of the porn wars. Amongst those included are ACLU spokesperson Barry Lynn, forensic psychiatrist Park Elliott Dietz, criminologist A. Nichols Groth, former Eros magazine publisher Ralph Ginzburg, anthropologist Carole Vance, pornographer Al Goldstein, Harvard Law School professor Frederick Schauer, radical feminist Andrea Dworkin, and representatives of Women Against Pornography, National Organization For Women, and the National Christian Association. Eight years in the making, this masterful documentary is an invaluable asset to serious discussion in disciplines as varied as sociology, ethics, women s studies, psychology, constitutional law, and criminal justice. Episode 1","","51 minutes","[""The World's War""]","This thought-provoking series goes back to the battlefields of the First World War to transform our image and understanding of the conflict in terms of the people who fought and died in the Great War. It reminds us of those who even now are sidelined in history. Every major battle of World War One was fought by multi-racial allied armies; over a million non-white soldiers died in the conflict. They fell on the Western Front and in the battlefields of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Yet from the moment the guns fell silent their part in the ‘Great War for Civilisation’ was marginalised and then forgotten. The war also starkly exposed the contradictions and hypocrisies that surrounded race in the early 20th century, with huge differences in the behaviour of the Allied nations towards non-white peoples, and war itself changed those attitudes yet further. The use of black troops by the allies became the focus of a furious German propaganda campaign, yet the Kaiser’s army also employed thousands of black soldiers in the war in Africa. The exploits of black Africans and black Americans were celebrated by the French and Americans, and used in their own propaganda to shore up support for the war at home. A century later new historical research is bringing their extraordinary stories out of the historical shadows.","stream","[]","[]","['World War, 1914-1918', 'Armed forces']","['Documentary films', 'Educational films']","https://d3crmev290s45i.cloudfront.net/frames/1008343xxx/1008343450/1008343450-disc001-file001-frame00180-size-exact-570x350.jpg","https://www.remote.uwosh.edu/login?url=http://www.aspresolver.com/aspresolver.asp?MARC;3366606" "asp2314856-curv","","Cyberwar in China","2013","28 min","[]","A half hour documentary about social media in China. Tour guides, travel agents, hotels, souvenir vendors and the like are profiting from the interest in the Holocaust. Even ""Schindler's List tours"" are proliferating. Yet despite such commercialism, this pilgrimage was deeply meaningful for the group we follow.
